FAIRPORT HARBOR — Wellsville’s boys basketball team couldn’t keep up with the zippy Skippers of Fairport Harding on Monday night in a Div. VII district semifinal.

The No. 2 seed Skippers used quick ball rotations and a stellar passing display to down the Tigers 79-48.

Wellsville, the 13th seed, ended its season at 10-14, while the Skippers are 21-2.

The Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference went 2-8 in the tournament.

The Tigers were down 21-11 after the first quarter and 41-24 at the half.

Yomar Castellano led the Skippers with 24 points.

For the Tigers, Darnell Roe had 14 points, three rebounds and three assists. Austin Adkins chipped in with 12 points. Andrew Mackey added seven rebounds.

Wellsville had 21 turnovers on the night.

The Skippers advance to meet No. 6 seed Medina Christian at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the district final at Smithville High School.

The winner of that district final will meet the winner of Saturday’s No. 3 Heartland and No. 7 Kidron Central Christian district final in the regional semifinal at 6 p.m. March 10 at Barberton High School.

Smithville 57, United 20

SMITHVILLE — The United boys haven’t fared well against Smithville this school year.

United’s first trip to the district basketball semifinals in 41 years ended with a 57-20 loss to third-seeded Smithville in Division VI play Monday.

The Smithies won a playoff football game at United, 27-26, in November.

Smithville defeated Southern, 78-24, and United in tournament play this season.

Smithville (19-5) advances to play 18th-seeded Willoughby Andrews Osborne (12-10) in the district final at 7 p.m. Saturday at Gates Mills Gilmour Academy. Andrews Osborne defeated 15th-seded Campbell Memorial, 42-37, in overtime Monday. Andrews Osborne is 4-6 in games decided by five points or less.

The 21st-seeded Eagles finish the season with 12-11 record.
