Brown qualifies for fourth state tourney
MENTOR — United Local senior Auston Brown is headed to her fourth state tournament after action on Sunday at the girls district wrestling tournament at Mentor High School.
Brown made it to the 135-pound final where she was pinned in 51 seconds by Talea Guntrum of Steubenville. Brown (41-5) is a three-time state placer for the Eagles and was third at 125 last year. Brown is ranked No. 3 in the weight class by DubStat while Guntrum (41-0) is No. 1.
East Liverpool junior Paige Cowan finished third after scoring a default win over Austintown’s Yelieishka Perez- Navedo in the 125-pound final. Cowan is 39-4 and heads to the state tournament for the third time. Cowan was sixth at 125 last year at state.
Fellow Potter junior Alanna McGonigal is making her second appearance at state after a 3-1 loss to Elyria’s Seraiah Jackson in the 170-pound third-place match. McGonigal is 28-8.
West Branch junior Grace Bates also qualified for state with a pin of Mogadore’s Mackenzie Shellenbarger in the third-place match at 155. Bates is 39-9 on the season.
The fourth annual girls state tournament runs along with the boys tournament from Friday through Sunday at the Schottenstein Center.
