WELLSVILLE -- Wellsville is making its way through the Northeastern Athletic Conference, which Leetonia will be joining in the fall.
The 13th-seeded Tigers road a second-half surge past 15th-seeded Ashtabula St. John, 72-47, in a Division VII sectional final Thursday.
It was a one-point game at halftime before Wellsville went on a 46-22 outburst in the second half.
Wellsville improves to 10-13 after starting the season at 1-5. The Tigers will play at NAC champion Fairport Harding (19-2) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Monday. The Skippers lost to Cleveland Glenville, 93-66, and Painesville Rivers, 77-74. Fairport Harding advanced by beating Youngstown Academy for Urban Scholars, 89-39, Thursday.
Darnell Roe scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the second half for Wellsville. Roe also had six assists.
Austin Adkins followed with 16 points. Haydin Oliver totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds and Jeron Jackson had 10 points and three steals.
St. John held its last lead at 8-7. Adkins took over from there, scoring seven points in the final 2:44 of the first quarter to give the Tigers a 16-13 lead.
Wellsville led 26-22 as Roe scored eight of the Tigers' last 10 second-quarter points. The Tigers led 26-25 at halftime and wore down St. John in the second half.
St. John finished at 8-14 after a 1-6 start.
