Good starts for Indians, Eagles

Southern 53, Hillsdale 39

SALINEVILLE — The Southern girls basketball team is not satisfied after the school’s first 22-0 regular season.

The fifth-seeded Indians opened Division VI tournament play with an early 10-point lead and beat 22nd-seeded Jeromesville Hillsdale, 53-39, in a sectional final Thursday.

Southern (23-0) advances to host 10th-seeded Columbia Station Columbia (16-7) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Colubia beat 31st-seeded Medina Christian, 58-29, Thursday.

Katie Kellogg scored 11 points in the first quarter to give Southern a 20-10 lead. The Indians widened the margin to 31-19 by halftime.

Katie Kellogg topped the Indians with a game-high 19 points, 10 steals, seven rebounds and seven assists. Fellow freshman Kalayah Crute totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Allyssa Shroades followed with nine points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Haylee Kellogg hit a pair of three-pointers to go with three assists, two rebounds and two assists. Maddy Jones had five rebounds and three assists and Hailey Maines had three steals and two rebounds.

Hillsdale lost five of its last seven games to end the season with a 10-14 record.

United 50, Campbell 33

HANOVERTON — Once the United girls got going, they have been tough to stop.

The 17th-seeded Eagles won for the seventh time in eight games by downing 28th-seeded Campbell Memorial, 50-33, in a Division VI Northeast 4 sectional final Thursday.

United improves to 15-8 after a 1-4 start. The Eagles will play at third-seeded Richmond Heights (17-5) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Richmond Heights beat 34th-seeded Wellington, 50-26, Thursday.

Maelee Smith and Reagan Good combined for 41 points and 29 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Smith collected a game-high 28 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and Good totaled 13 points, 19 rebounds and seven steals.

Marin Stryffeler contributed a pair of three-pointers and Ines Vilela Rego had seven steals and four rebounds.

Campbell ends the season with a 6-16 record.

Canton Central 62, East Palestine 20

CANTON — Second-seeded Canton Central Catholic put up big numbers against a bigger-school schedule.

The Crusaders led 46-6 at halftime and rolled over 23rd-seeded East Palestine, 62-20, in a Division VI Northeast 3 sectional final Thursday.

Seven Central Catholic players hit baskets in the first quarter as the Crusaders built a 27-4 lead.

Sarah Belden paced Canton Central with a game-high 17 points, including 10 in the second quarter. Jillyan Stevens followed with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Grace Finefrock and Aubrey Harris-Hall added eight points apiece.

Jacklyn Ogle scored a basket in every quarter to lead the Bulldogs with eight points.

Canton Central improves to 18-5 and will host 18th-seeded Kirtland in the district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Kirtland beat 30th-seeded Oberlin, 56-43, Thursday.

East Palestine — which struggled with injuries and low numbers all season — finished at 11-13, including 2-3 in games decided by four points or less.

West Branch 63, Akron East 9

BELOIT — West Branch doesn’t have to look far for its next tournament opponent.

The fourth-seeded Warriors handled 34th-seeded Akron East, 63-9, in a Division IV Northeast 2 sectional final Thursday to set up another showdown against rival Salem.

West Branch (20-3) will host 21st-seeded Salem at 7 p.m. Tuesday, meeting for the third time in a season for the second straight year. The Warriors own a seven-game winning streak against the Quakers, including win of 41-22 and 46-34 in January.

It will be closer than Thursday’s sectional opener.

West Branch came out fired up against the Dragons and scored the first 32 points.

Alli Kanagy’s three-pointer gave the Warriors a 32-0 lead with 3:27 left in the second quarter.

Akron East’s first two baskets were layups in the final 3:10 of the second quarter as the Dragons trailed 39-4.

West Branch opened up leads of 46-4, 55-5 and 61-6 in the second half.

Akron East finished 4-11 after winning three of its last five regular-season games.

Maplewood 70, Wellsville 8

CORTLAND — Third-seeded Maplewood ended 22nd-seeded Wellsville’s winless season with a 70-8 decision in a Division VII Northeast 2 sectional final Thursday.

The Rockets won for the 13th time in 14 games to improve to 20-3. The three losses were to Crestview, Rootstown and Warrensville Heights.

Maplewood will play the play the winner of Saturday’s game with No. 16 Elyria Open Door at No. 12 Lisbon in the district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Wellsville finishes the season at 0-23 and has a 24-game losing streak. The Tigers were held to 356 points this season, an average of 15.5 points per game.

St. Marys 69, Oak Glen 64

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The St. Marys girls basketball team won its eighth game in a row by downing Oak Glen, 69-64, Thursday.

St. Marys improves to 16-4, while Oak Glen moves to 12-9.

Oak Glen will play at Doddridge County on Saturday. Doddridge County beat St. Marys, 46-45, on Jan. 8.
