Clemmer scores 25 in Columbiana victory

Columbiana 45, Lisbon 22
COLUMBIANA — With junior Annah Clemmer scoring at will and Columbiana’s full-court pressure, the Clippers ran away from Bellaire for a 45-22 win in an OVAC consolation game Thursday.
Clemmer scored 18 of her game-high 25 points in the first half when she couldn’t be stopped. Evy Rapp added 11 points and was a solid defensive presence.
Columbiana snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 17-4. The Clippers will wrap up the regular season Wednesday when they travel to Southern Local on Wednesday. Southern has clinched a share of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title and Columbiana needs to win to gain a share.
The Clippers played like champions against Bellaire, taking a 16-0 lead in the first quarter as they shot 7-of-11 from the field and the Big Reds were 0-of-14.
Clemmer scored 11 points in the first quarter and Bellaire got its first field goal with 7:22 to play in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 17-3. Clemmer responded with a three-pointer and a jumper for a 22-3 lead.
The Clippers took a 26-6 halftime lead as Clemmer scored a fastbreak layup off a nice pass from Josie Hepler. Besides Clemmer’s 18 points in the first half, Rapp scored five and Megan Moser had a three-pointer.
Clemmer scored 24 of Columbiana’s first 32 points. Columbiana’s largest lead was 42-15 early in the fourth quarter.
Bellaire, now 11-9 overall, will host Steubenville on Monday.

Wheeling Central 72, United 42
HANOVERTON — Wheeling Central made its way through the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference this week.
The Maroon Knights beat United, 72-42, in an OVAC consolation game Thursday
Wheeling Central improves to 13-4, including a 76-52 win over Columbiana on Monday. The Eagles drop to 12-8.
Seneca Heller led the Maroon Knights with a game-high 18 points, followed by Erin Maxwell with 16, Bella Fitzsimmons 15 and Haley Severns 12.
Maxwell scored eight points in the first quarter to give the Maroon Knights an early 18-7 advantage.
Maelee Smith topped United with 15 points and seven rebounds. Reagan Good had 10 points and eight rebounds. Ines Vilela Rego added seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Bella Thompson dished out seven assists.
Both teams play Monday as United hosts Valley Christian for a varsity-only contest at 5:30 p.m. and Wheeling Central hosts 16-4 Fort Frye.

YOUNGSTOWN — Lisbon’s girls basketball team got an early start against Liberty on Thursday in a ‘Hoops at Noon’ game at Liberty High School.
Led by Eme Cook’s 15 points the Blue Devils pulled out a 40-36 win on Thursdsay. Lisbon is 12-9 and hosts Heartland on Wednesday to close out the regular season.
Jayden Smyth added 12 points for the winners, while Lylah Brown had 10 points.
Danelle Coleman had 10 points for Liberty, 3-16.

CAMBRIDGE — Beaver Local’s girls basketball team scored a 45-41 win over Cambridge on Thursday in an OVAC consolation game.
Beaver Local (8-12) trailed by seven at half time only to take a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Mercedes McCullough led the Beavers with 11 points. Mallory Miller added 10 points.
Cambridge fell to 4-17. The Bobcats dressed just six players.
Beaver Local goes to Minerva on Saturday and will close out the regular season by hosting Salem on Wednesday.

YOUNGSTOWN –Youngstown East shutout Leetonia in the first quarter to cruise to a 49-17 win on Thursday in girls basketball action.
The Golden Bears led 16-0 after the first quarter and 22-4 at halftime.
Leetonia falls to 1-18, while East is 6-7.
Leetonia hosts Heartland on Monday.

Salem 52, Hubbard 23
HUBBARD — Abby Knickerbocker had 21 points and nine rebounds as Salem downed Hubbard 52-23 on Thursday in girls basketball action.
The Quakers are 11-10 and are at Beaver Local to end the regular season on Wednesday. The tournament draw is set for Sunday. Salem is ranked 23rd out of 37 teams by the OHSAA RPI for Div. IV in Northeast Ohio.
Maddy Andres added nine points and six rebounds for Salem.

COLUMBIANA — Wood County Christian from Williamstown, West Virginia snuck out of Heartland Christian School with a 32-31 victory on Thursday in an OVAC consolation game.
Sarah Reynolds posted 26 points for the Lions.
Kaylin Norbo’s jumper with 22 seconds left cut the lead to one for the Lions, but they could get no closer the rest of the way.
Heartland fell to 8-10 and is at Leetonia on Monday.
Wood County is 8-6.

River 44, East Liverpool 35
HANNIBAL — East Liverpool’s girls basketball team went on the road for an OVAC consolation contest on Thursday and came up short 44-35 at River.
East Liverpool is 6-14, while River is 11-10.
The Potters , who are ranked ninth out of 16 teams in the OHSAA Div. IV East District RPI heading into Sunday’s draw, host Oak Glen on Wednesday. Of the 16 teams in the Div. IV East District only three have records over .500.
