History against Broncos’ Stidham
(AP) — The injury that knocked Denver’s Bo Nix out of the playoffs has created a most unusual situation with Jarrett Stidham set to start the AFC title game after not throwing a single pass during a game the last two seasons.
When Stidham takes the field against New England on Sunday, it will be 749 days since his last pass attempt in the regular season or playoffs in Week 18 of the 2022 season against Las Vegas.
According to the NFL research department, that will be more than double the previous longest stretch without a pass attempt by a playoff starter with Joe Webb having gone 370 days before his 2012 wild-card start for Minnesota against Green Bay.
Stidham’s four career starts are the fewest ever for a QB starting in a conference championship game — one fewer than Jeff Hostetler had when he started the 1990 NFC title game for the Giants. Hostetler had four career regular-season starts and had won the divisional round when he started that win over San Francisco.
The Broncos will be the ninth team to start multiple quarterbacks in the same postseason and will try to become the fifth to get wins from both. Buffalo was the last to do it when backup Frank Reich won two games in place of the injured Jim Kelly in the 1992 playoffs before Kelly returned and won the AFC title game. The Bills lost the Super Bowl to Dallas.
The 1972 Dolphins, who finished a perfect 17-0, were the only Super Bowl champions to use two starting quarterbacks in the playoffs with Earl Morrall winning the first two rounds before Bob Griese returned from a broken leg to win the Super Bowl.
Golfer has a wild ride
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Blades Brown, the 18-year-old who turned pro last year, had a 67 in the first round of The American Express on Thursday to cap off a wild 24 hours.
He finished the Korn Ferry Tour event in the Bahamas on Wednesday (tie for 17th), then flew private to Palm Springs, arriving about 8 p.m. He had a 9:58 a.m. tee time Thursday at La Quinta. He earned the flight voucher as a perk for finishing in the top 50 at the Myrtle Beach Classic last year.
Also on Thursday, Brian Harman was penalized two shots for hitting the wrong ball on the 10th hole. Golf Channel reported it was an amateur’s golf ball he hit.
Penguins score three goals in early 37 seconds
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Anthony Mantha scored twice, Sidney Crosby made it three in an early 37-second span and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Edmonton Oilers 6-2 on Thursday night.
The 37-second spree was the fastest three goals in Penguins history and the fastest three allowed by the Oilers.
The Penguins scored on three of their first four shots. Just 2:20 in, Justin Brazeau made a nifty pass through a defender’s legs to Mantha, who deflected it in. Twenty-two seconds later, Mantha scored on a breakaway. Crosby struck 15 seconds after that, deflecting a pass from the slot into the net.
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist, Rickard Rakell, and Egor Chinakhov also scored and Arturs Silovs made 30 saves. The Penguins have won three straight and are 10-2-2 in their last 14 to get to 25-14-11.
Connor McDavid was held pointless in consecutive games are the first time this season. The last time he went two games without a point was Feb. 7 and Feb. 22, 2025, a pair of matches broken up by the 4 Nations Face-Off.
The Penguins will play at Vancouver on Sunday.
ABC to air three regular-season MLB games
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Three regular-season weekend baseball games will air on ABC this year.
The San Francisco Giants will host the Chicago Cubs on June 14 at 3 p.m. EDT. Two weeks later, the New York Yankees will face the Boston Red Sox at 1 p.m.
ABC will air another rivalry on Aug. 16 when the Cubs host the St. Louis Cardinals at 3 p.m.
The games on ABC are part of ESPN’s three-year rights agreement with Major League Baseball that takes effect this season. ABC, like ESPN part of The Walt Disney Co., previously aired games during the wild card round, but those move to NBC and Peacock, along with the package of Sunday night games that ESPN had aired since its first MLB broadcasts in 1990.
