Potters gain two champs

WHEELING, W.Va. — East Liverpool’s girls wrestling team made sure to make an impact at the first OVAC Girls Wrestling Championships on Saturday at WesBanco Arena.

Paige Cowan (16-2) pinned Warren’s Kendra Hescht in 1:19 to win the 126 pound title, while Alanna McGonigal (15-3) won the 165 title with a pin of Wheeling Park’s Kylan Cunningham in 1:41.

Oak Glen’s Alexandra Watkins (20-3) delivered her school’s first OVAC girls title with a pin of East Liverpool’s Kera Coil (8-6) in 48 seconds at 152 pounds.

East Palestine’s McKenna Paparella (13-6) placed second at 107 after she was pinned by Shenandoah’s Layken Lively in 43 seconds.

The Potters finished third in the team standings after Warren and Wheeling Park.

The girls tournament featured 95 girls from 27 schools.

Girls Top Gun

ALLIANCE — Salem’s Paige Menough won at 140 pounds and United’s Auston Brown took the 135 title on Saturday at the Top Gun Girls Tournament at Alliance High School.

United’s Taylor Simmons was second at 120 pounds, while the Golden Eagles’ Hadley Taylor was second at 170.

West Branch’s Grace Bates was second at 155.

United finished fourth as a team, while Salem was sixth.

Austintown Fitch was the team champion.
