OVAC top seeds advance
WHEELING, W.Va.–The area’s top wrestlers did what they were expected to on the opening night of the 72nd annual Ron Mauck Ohio Valley Athletic Conference at WesBanco Arena.
At 106 pounds, top seed Jordan Bates of East Liverpool and Kyle Ingram of East Liverpool had quick pins to advance. Oak Glen’s Jordan Tomsic advanced on a bye.
Beaver Local’s Jeryck Boyd advanced at 113 by way of a bye as did John Burkett at 120.
Oak Glen’s Kaleb Eckleberry and East Liverpool’s Jaydence Rogers both advanced by way of a bye at 126.
At 132, Beaver Local’s Leo Wilkes and East Liverpool’s Wyatt McCune scored pins to advance out of the opening round.
At 138, Oak Glen’s Kayden Spencer advanced by way of a bye.
At 144, Beaver Local’s Matthew Tomaino and Oak Glen’s Wyatt Wolanski were winners via pin. East Palestine’s Jacob Hoffer also advanced by a decision.
Top-seed Bobby Buchheit of Beaver Local won in a quick pin at 150. Also gaining pins at 150 was Oak Glen’s Seth Witherow, Wellsville’s Leland Monte and East Liverpool’s Kayden Danver.
Beaver Local’s Jake Hughes, the top seed at 157, advanced by a quick pin. East Liverpool’s Hudson Fink and Oak Glen Glen’s Parker Boyce also advanced by way of a pin at 157.
Beaver Local’s Evan Ours, Southern Local’s Rowan Wiley and Oak Glen’s Paxton Ware all advanced by way of pin at 165.
At 175, Beaver Local’s Bo Moore and East Liverpool’s Peyton Shaw advanced on byes.
At 190 pounds, Wellsville’s Colton Malone and East Liverpool’s Xavier Lara advanced on byes.
Beaver Local’s Robert Marra and Oak Glen’s Noah Schmidt won by pin at 215 pounds. Daniel Carroll of East Liverpool advanced by a bye in that weight class as well.
In the heavyweight division, Oak Glen’s Evan Geer advanced by way of a bye.
The tournament continues will second round matches and consolations at noon today. Friday’s second session starts at 6 p.m.
