Indians grab EOAC
Southern 75, Wellsville 19
SALINEVILLE — The job is only half done for the Southern girls basketball team.
The Indians captured a share of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title by downing Wellsville, 75-19, Thursday.
Southern improves to 19-0 overall and 13-0 in the EOAC, one game ahead of Columbiana. Southern will host Columbiana on Feb. 11 and needs a win to clinch sole possession of the league crown.
It is the Indians’ second league title since 1990 and eighth overall.
Southern started its four seniors — Allyssa Shroades, Haylee Kellogg and twins Makenna Jones and Maddy Jones. They responded by combining for 49 points.
Shroades led all scorers with 27 points, including 24 in the first half, to go along with nine steals, four rebounds and three assists. She hit five three-pointers to give her more than 200 in her career.
Makenna Jones collected 13 points, seven assists, five steals and three rebounds; Maddy Jones had five points, six rebounds and three assists; Haylee Kellogg added four points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Katie Kellogg played only the first three minutes of the first half as she gave way for the seniors before returning, totaling 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Raelea Carosiello contributed three steals and two rebounds.
Southern will host Shadyside (9-9) in an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 2A semifinal on Monday. It will be a varsity-only contest beginning at 7 p.m.
Kenzie Bosco topped Wellsville by scoring 17 of the Tigers’ 19 points, including a trio of three-pointers.
Wellsville drops to 0-18 and 0-13 in the EAOC. The Tigers will play at Conotton Valley on Wednesday.

Columbiana 53, Lisbon 29
LISBON — Junior Annah Clemmer scored a career-high 26 points in leading Columbiana past Lisbon, 53-29, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Thursday.
Columbiana improves to 16-2 overall and 12-1 in league play, one game behind Southern with one league game left at Southern on Feb. 11.
The Clippers have won nine in a row and will be tested Saturday when they host Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Tier champion Western Reserve, which is 18-1 with its lone loss to perennial state power Berlin Hiland.
Clemmer scored 26 of Columbiana’s first 49 points. Megan Moser added 13 points and Tori Waselich seven.
Lisbon drops to 10-9 and 6-7 in the EOAC. The Blue Devils will wrap up lead play Monday at East Palestine.
Jayden Smyth topped Lisbon with 10 points. Eme Cook contributed seven.
The Blue Devils led 8-4 with Cook scoring six points and then 12-9 as Lylah Brown hit a long three-pointer from the top of the key at the end of the first quarter.
After being tied 13-13 in the second quarter, Columbiana outscored Lisbon 40-16 the rest of the way.
The Clippers went on a 9-0 run and held the Blue Devils to two free throws in the second quarter to take a 29-14 halftime lead.
Columbiana went up 42-19 through three quarters and as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter at 53-28.
Columbiana also won the junior varsity game, 12-10. Kadence Hood and Gracyn Owens each scored five points for Lisbon.
The Blue Devils will wrap up league play at East Palestine on Monday.

United 71, Leetonia 17
HANOVERTON — Sophomore Malee Smith scored 33 points and freshman point guard Bella Thompson had a school-record 17 assists in United’s 71-17 win over Leetonia on Thursday.
United improves to 11-7 overall and 11-3 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. The Eagles have won 10 of their last 13 games.
United’s Reagan Good totaled 15 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Ines Vilela Rego contributed 11 points and four steals.
Thompson had eight points and seven steals to go along with 17 assists, breaking the single-game school record of 16 set by Cathy Phillips in the 1978-79 season.
Smith also collected eight rebounds and four steals.
Leetonia lost its ninth in a row to fall to 1-15 and 1-11 in league play.
United also won the junior varsity game, 24-17, as Atlee Brinker scored eight points and Kylie Holmes seven.
Both teams play Tuesday as United visits East Liverpool and Leetonia hosts Youngstown East.
East Palestine 48, Valley 45 OT
YOUNGSTOWN — Jacklyn Ogle tallied 27 poins with six rebounds as East Palestine scored a 48-45 win in overtime over Valley Christian on Thursday.
East Palestine moved to 10-10 and 6-7 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.
Four different Bulldogs scored in the overtime period with Ogle, Cami Kridler, Bella Wendell and Amira Wilson providing key points. Kridler returned to the lineup after being out with a concussion to score 12 points.
Violet Glavan had eight rebounds and four assists. Amara Wilson had four steals.
Valley fell to 6-10 and 5-8 in the league.
The Bulldogs host Lisbon on Monday.

TORONTO –Sarah Reynolds scored a game-high 20 points and Kaylin Norbo and Emily Rhodes added 12 apiece as Heartland Christian bounced Toronto, 58-36, Thursday.
Heartland improves to 8-9, while Toronto drops to 7-12.
Reynolds scored 18 points in the first half and Norbo and Gabriella McDowell each added eight points as the Lions built a 42-9 lead.
Josey Dickinson paced Toronto with 16 points.
The Red Knights drop to 7-12.

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Beaver Local girls junior varsity basketball team doubled up East Liverpoool, 49-24, Thursday.
Mercedes McCullough led the Beavers with a game-high 16 points. Gianna Congrove added 10 points and Maci Bourne eight.
The Beavers are 12-4 on the season.
Leading the Potters were Arie Weyand and Abriana Copeland with seven points apiece.
