Crestview holds off Garfield’s fourth-quarter rally

COLUMBIANA — The Crestview boys almost let one get away Thursday.

Carter Love and Caleb Gaydos hit free throws in the final six seconds after the Rebels squandered an 11-point lead to pull out a 46-44 win over Garrettsville Garfield in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Tier action.

The Rebels improve to 6-10 overall and 3-7 in the MVAC, while Garfield drops to 5-9 and 3-7 in league play. Garfield beat Crestview 79-71 on Dec. 23.

The time the Rebels let a 42-31 lead with two minutes to play slip away as Garfield rallied to tie the score at 44-44.

Garfield’s Brandyn Bogucki drove through the Rebel defense for an uncontested layup to tie the score with 15 seconds left.

Love split a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining for a 45-44 Rebel lead.

Bogucki drove down the court and scored on a layup, but was called for charging with 1.7 seconds remaining.

Gaydos made the first of two foul shots with 0.3 seconds to play to make the final score 46-44.

Crestview is scheduled to play at Struthers on Saturday
