Tigers Roe their boat

Wellsville 56, Southern 40

WELLSVILLE — Wellsville was glad to have junior guard Darnell Roe back after a six-game absence due to an injury on Tuesday against rival Southern.

Roe managed 19 points, including 11 in the second half, to lead the Tigers to a 56-40 win on a night when the team shot 32 percent from the field.

The Tigers (3-5, 3-2 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference) struggled against Southern’s zone in the first half. The Indian led 10-9 after the first quarter and managed to be within 1 of the Tigers at halftime.

“We picked up the intensity at halftime and played the way we needed to,” Wellsville coach Nate Scott said.

Austin Adkins added 17 points, eight steals and five assists for Wellsville. Clayten Kersey chipped in seven points and eight rebounds. Jeron Jackson had five points and six rebounds.

Senior Jacob McCurdy had 16 points to lead the Indians, 1-6 and 0-5 in the EOAC.

Wellsville won the two quarter jayvee game, 27-6. Zac Banks had nine points for the Tigers.

Wellsville will play Bridgeport at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Toronto Todd Kalivoda Showcase.

Southern is at East Canton on Jan. 3.

United 62, Leetonia 21

LEETONIA — Ten United players hit baskets as the Eagles pulled away from Leetonia for a 62-21 win Tuesday.

The Eagles improve to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference, two games behind league-leading Valley Christian.

Abram Ceresna and Lance Rycraft both scored 11 points to lead United. Matthew Hoopes, Kadin Schonauer and Wyatt Blevins added eight points apiece.

Leetonia drops to 2-6 and 1-4 in the EOAC.

Ethan Mathia had nine points and Aiden Hunter seven for the Bears.

United also won the junior varsity game, 23-6, as Carter Cope and Levi Lucas each scored six points.

Leetonia will play at Crestview on Saturday, while United travels to Southern on Jan. 6.

Valley 62, East Palestine 40

EAST PALESTINE — Valley Christian is in sole possession of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference lead after a 62-40 win over East Palestine on Tuesday.

The Eagles improve to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in the EOAC, one game ahead of Columbiana and Lisbon and two ahead of United and Wellsville.

Valley held East Palestine to 25 points through three quarters for a 40-25 lead.

Jordan Tutwiler scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the first half to lead Valley. Deion Miller added 15 points and King Swiggett 12.

East Palestine drops to 0-6 and 0-5 in the EOAC.

Drew Bycroft topped the Bulldogs with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. RJ May had eight points and three rebounds, Peyton Rutledge seven points and four rebounds and Clark Rutledge seven points and three rebounds.

East Palestine won the junior varsity game, 46-33. Caleb Dmyterko led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Mason Gorby added seven points

East Palestine will host Springfield on Saturday, while Valley plays at Youngstown Mooney on Jan. 3.

WELLSBURG, W.Va. — Beaver Local extended its unbeaten run to start the season with a 65-58 win over Brooke on Tuesday in Buckeye 8 play.

The Beavers are 7-0 and will be at St. Clairsville on Saturday.

Matthew Anderson led the winners with 22 points. Owen Hill added 13 points, while Aidan Dray had 11 points.

Brooke won the junior varsity game, 52-48.

For the Beavers, Jett Johnson had 15 points, Owen Moore 12 and Nathan Pusateri 11.

WINTERSVILLE — East Liverpool’s boys basketball team had to come back to beat Indian Creek 46-43 on Tuesday.

The Potters trailed 17-11 after a quarter and 25-15 at the half.

Sophomore Tyler Kirby paced the winners with 13 points. Nolan Irving added nine points as did Ben Myers.

East Liverpool is 4-2 and hosts Martins Ferry on Saturday.

Indian Creek is 1-5.

TORONTO — Austin Buchanan guided Toronto to a 65- 49 win over Oak Glen on Tuesday night.

Oak Glen fell to 2-2 and will host Madonna next Tuesday.

Tyler Evans scored 12 points to lead a balanced Oak Glen attack. Will Weekley added eight points.

Toronto won the jayvee game, 44-38. Camm Dittman had 11 points for the Golden Bears.
