CALCUTTA — Three Beaver Local returning state tournament state placers will be among the competitors on Saturday at the 48th annual Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Beaver Local High School.

Beaver Local junior Evan Ours, sophomore Jake Hughes and senior Robert Buchheit all are back as returning state placers. Buchheit (150 pounds) will be seeking his fourth Hoppel tournament individual title and is ranked second in the state at 150 pounds in Div. II according to DubStat. Hughes is also ranked second in the state at 157, while Ours is fourth at 165. The Beavers opened their season with a strong performance, finishing second at the Cambridge Invitational Championship.

The tournament serves as an annual celebration of the Hoppel family’s past achievements and current commitment to wrestling in the area.

Aside from the host Beavers, Austintown Fitch, Brooke, Crestview, East Liverpool, Edison, Girard, Oak Glen, Poland, Southern, South Range, Tri Valley and Wheeling Linsly are scheduled to appear.

The Hoppel brothers –Darryl, Jim and Carl — combined for six state high school wrestling championships and their father Everett was instrumental in starting the wrestling program at Beaver Local High School.

Action is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. The finals will be held a half hour following the fifth round at approximately 4 p.m.
