Four Beavers wear Hoppel crowns

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local’s wrestling team produced four individual champions on Saturday at the 48th annual Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Beaver Local High School.

Returning state placers Robert Buchheit (150 pounds), Jake Hughes (157) and Evan Ours (175) went the distance to show why they’re ranked in DubStat’s top 10 in their respective weight classes in the early season.

Buchheit’s win was his fourth Hoppel triumph.

Jordan Bates also won for the Beavers at 106.

East Liverpool, back at the Hoppel after a long absence, produced a champion at 113 pounds in Kyle Ingram. Oak Glen got in to the act with Wyatt Wolanski taking first at 144 pounds.

Austintown Fitch produced just two champions but took the overall individual title. Beaver Local was second with Oak Glen a distant third.

Waterloo D3 Classic

ATWATER — Crestview’s Josh Smith beat Wellsville’s Leland Monte 6-0 in the 157-pound final to highlight area performers on Saturday at the Waterloo D3 Classic.

For East Palestine, Blaine Thompson (150), Maxx Kunselman (132) and Zach Schnelle (190) were all fourth in their respective weight classes.

Crestview’s Bo Julian scored a 10-0 decision over United’s Rohan Kelly in the 175-pound fifth place match. Crestview’s Eli Scherer was also sixth at 165.

For United, Payne Graybeal was fourth at 215 and Hunter Casto was fifth at 190.

Hubbard Winter Tournament

HUBBARD — Salem’s Luke Bezilla captured first at 113 pounds to highlight Quaker wrestlers on Saturday at the Hubbard Winter Wrestling Tournament.

Jacob Dumont (132) and Aldin Weber (150) were second for the Quakers. Josh Mayhew was third at 144.

Hubbard Girls Tournament

HUBBARD — Several area girls wrestlers had strong showings on Sunday at the Hubbard Winter Wrestling Tournament.

East Liverpool’s Paige Cowan (130 pounds), United’s Auston Brown (135) and Salem’s Paige Menough (140) all took home individual titles.

Second place finishers included East Palestine’s McKenna Paparella (105), United’s Myla French (115), East Liverpool’s Alanna McGonigal (170) and Southern’s Aubree Pucci (190).

Taking third was United’s Taylor Simmons (120). Fourth place finishers included West Branch’s Grace Bates (170).
