Columbiana 57, Mathews 49

COLUMBIANA — Senator Johnson and Hunter Davanzo combined for 29 points over the final three quarters as Columbiana rallied past Mathews, 57-49, Tuesday.

The Clippers trailed 15-9 in the first quarter and outstscored Mathews 36-21 over the second and third quarters.

Columbiana improves to 2-0 and will host United next Tuesday.

Senator Johnson scored a game-high 18 points and Davanzo totaled 15 points and six rebounds. Cooper Brown collected Cooper Brown 11 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Avery Young added seven points and Carter Johnson three assists.

Mathews led by Jake Petak with 15 points.

Columbiana also won the junior varsity game, 54-48, as Zander Oliver scored 13 points. Londyn Deak led Mathews with 12 points.

Heartland 87, Bristol 69

COLUMBIANA –Heartland Christian outscored Bristol 22-7 in the final five minutes to pull away for an 87-69 victory Tuesday.

The Lions, coming off a championship in the Lisbon Tip-Off Tournament, improve to 3-0 and are averaging 81.7 points a game.

Four Heartland players scored at least 14 points, led by Isaiah Matthews and Brody Conway with 21 points apiece. Matthews had 11 points in the fourth quarter to help the Lions pull away. Jacob Reed collected 15 points and Collin Kalaher 14.

After playing to a 22-22 tie through one period of play, Heartland went ahead 46-31 at halftime and 61-50 at the end of the third quarter. The Panthers closed within 65-62 with 5:18 remaining, but couldn’t stop the fast-breaking Lions.

Heartland will host Wellsville on Friday.

Badger 74, Leetonia 54

KINSMAN — Tyler McWilliams scored 31 points in leading Badger past Leetonia, 74-54, Tuesday.

Alton Winchek added 15 points and Slater Stanhope 14.

Leetonia got 13 points from Ethan Mathia and 12 from Jason King.

Both teams are 1-1 and will return to action Friday with Leetonia at Mineral Ridge and Badger hosting Southington.

Louisville 44, West Branch 37

BELOIT — The Louisville boys basketball team played like state champions in the second half Tuesday.

Louisville, the defending Division III state champion, held West Branch to 16 points in the second half and rallied for a 44-37 win in the Leopards season opener.

West Branch drops to 2-0 on the season and 4-20 all-time against Louisville.

The Warriors gave up only two points in the second quarter to take a 21-10 halftime advantage. But the Leopards held a 34-16 scoring edge in the second half to pull ahead.

Brandon Sanders led Louisville with a game-high 13 points. Drake Wilson added nine points.

The Leopards had six turnovers, while forcing 18 Warrior turnovers.

Gavin Gregory topped West Branch with 10 points and eight rebounds. Kasen Weaver had seven points and four rebounds and Landon Coffee six points and seven rebounds. Zach Coffee grabbed five rebounds and Grady Hirst four. Jeremiah Thomas dished out four assists.

Louisville also won the junior varsity contest, 52-33. Mason Cosma led West Branch with eight points and Joey Troyer had six.

West Branch will play at Minerva on Friday.
