Quakers get season off to a fast start

Salem 50, Jefferson Area 8

BURTON — Three Salem players each scored as many points as Jefferson Area’s team did in the Quakers’ 50-8 win Saturday morning at the Berkshire Showcase.

Abby Knickerbocker scored a game-high 18 points, including seven in the first quarter as Salem built a 21-2 lead. Maddy Andres added nine points and Karlie Sampson eight.

The Quakers led 37-7 at halftime and limited the Falcons to one point in the second half.

Salem will host United on Tuesday with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m.

West Branch 56, Green 38

GREEN — The West Branch girls basketball team was seeing Green in Saturday’ season opener.

The Warriors pulled away from the Green Bulldogs for a 56-38 victory.

Audrey Eaton led the West branch with 18 points, including three three-pointers. Freshman Madi Hoopes acored 13 points in her first career varsity game. Alli Kanagy added eight points, Tallie Muniz seven and Hallie Vie Burton five. Freshmen Iris Nezbeth and Elli Colian contributed with their first varsity points.

West Branch led 14-12 lead the first quarter and 31-24 by halftime. The Warriors held Green to 14 points in the second half.

West Branch will host Uniontown Lake on Dec. 1 in the home opener. The junior varsity match starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:45 p.m.

Steubenville 69, East Liverpool 17

EAST LIVERPOOL — It was a rough weekend for the East Liverpool girls basketball team.

The Potters lost to Steubenville, 69-17, Saturday at the Potter Fieldhouse — a day after losing the opener to Southern Local 51-17.

Four Steubenville players scored in double figures led by Nylah McShan with 16 points.
