EOAC holds its ground

LISBON — The Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference school superintendents and athletic directors met Wednesday morning at War Memorial Stadium after Leetonia announced is leaving the league at the start of next school year.

“There were a lot of discussions, but no decisions,” EOAC commissioner Howard Friend said.

Superintendents from the seven remaining league schools along with all the athletic directors met and seem to be going to stay the course at this time.

Friend said no schools have contacted the Columbiana County-based league about joining and everyone else seem to be staying.

“We might decide to stay with seven and will just have to fill their gaps (in the schedules),” he said.

Leetonia school officials announced Sept. 24 the Bears are joining the Northeast Athletic Conference because they said they could no longer be competitive against larger schools in the EOAC.

“We were surprised, but not shocked,” Friend said. “They’ve been talking about this for a year.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
