Eagles boot Oberlin

HANOVERTON — Josh Hawkins had one goal and two assists and Cayden Pitts one goal and one assists in leading the 16th-seeded United boys soccer team past 21st-seeded Oberlin, 5-0, Saturday night in a Division V sectional final.

Jude Andrea and Zach Blake each added a goal each. The fifth Eagle goal came from an Oberlin own goal.

Caisen Wright rounded out the Eagle attack with an assist. Seth Blake recorded two saves in goal for the shutout.

United won its third in a row to improve to 8-7-2. The Eagles will play ninth-seeded Cornerstone Christian in the district semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Euclid High School.

Cornerstone is 14-2-1 and has posted three straight shutouts. The Patriots’ losses were to Open Door and Painesville Harvey. They have outscored their opponents 108-13 in their 14 victories.

Oberlin finished the season at 7-11-1. The Phoenix won one of their last six matches.

West Branch 5, Orrville 1

BELOIT — Reed Martucci scored two goals as sixth-seeded West Branch topped 22nd-seeded Orville, 5-1, in a Division IV boys soccer sectional final on Saturday night.

Mason Thomas and Leonel Gonzalez also had goals for the Warriors. West Branch’s fifth goal came on an Orrville own goal.

Getting assists were Gavin Clemens and Ezra Bickle. Lance Myers recorded three saves. Orrville’s lone goal came on a penalty kick.

West Branch improves to 13-4 and has allowed 11 goals all season. The Warriors will host ninth-seeded Mogadore Field in the district semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Field is 14-4 with losses to Streetsboro, Marlington, Tallmadge and Louisville.

Orville finished at 6-8-4.

Columbiana 2, Cuyahoga Heights 0

COLUMBIANA –The Columbiana girls soccer team blanked 24th-seeded Cuyahoga Heights, 2-0, Saturday to set up a Division V district semifinal showdown.

Aubrie Quetot and Josie Hepler scored goals for Columbiana, which has won five straight matches to improve to 10-5-3.

The 17th-seeded Clippers will travel to fourth-seeded and unbeaten Bristol at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Bristol is 17-0-1 on the season, outscoring their opponents a combined 101-18. The only blemish on the Panthers’ record is a 1-1 tie at Columbiana on Sept. 13.

Cuyahoga Heights finishes at 7-9-2.
