Clippers battle Bristol into Thursday
BRISTOLVILLE — Earlier in the season, Bristol and Columbiana played to a draw.
In the postseason, that isn’t an option. After 80 minutes, the teams were dead even once again in the Division V district semifinal on Wednesday.
Another 15 minutes couldn’t decide a winner as both teams frantically tried to end the game before sundown. With no stadium lights, the game had to be called due to darkness tied 2-2.
“The girls played hard,” Panthers coach Mike Armour said. “They played very hard. A lot of them didn’t get breaks, and it’s longer than an 80-minute game now, so I’m very proud of everyone.”
Annah Clemmer and Josie Hepler got the 17th-seeded Clippers (10-5-3) on the board.
Fourth-seeded Bristol went down 2-0 in the first half, but a goal from Indie’ona Jackson before the break cut into the lead and re-ignited the Panthers.
Ten minutes into the second half, Lauren Church knotted the game back up.
It’s the kind of game Clippers coach Jason Janis was expecting.
“We knew they were a tough team coming in, and we knew this was going to be a good matchup,” Janis said. “We didn’t play our best the first time out, but I don’t know that they did either. It’s just been back and forth, to be honest. I mean, it’s what I would expect from them. They’re undefeated, they don’t want to lose, they don’t want their season to end, and I don’t think our girls want their season to end either.
“I feel like whoever wins this matchup has a pretty good chance of winning the district final, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it ends up playing out. I’m not excited to have to come back, but I’m excited to see what happens in the end.”
The game will resume at 5:30 p.m. today at Bristol High School at the start of the second overtime. If a second overtime period doesn’t decide a winner, the teams will trade penalty kicks.
Hoping it doesn’t get to that, the Panthers (17-0-1) want to get more ball movement, and capitalize on their chances.
“I need to see a little bit more ball movement inside and outside, and just to finish,” Armour said. “We had some looks there in the second half, and even into the overtime period and we just couldn’t capitalize on it.”
The winner will play ninth-seeded Columbia Station in the district final at 10 a.m. Saturday at Magnifat High School. Columbia Station topped 19th-seeded Ashland Mapleton, 2-1, in overtime Wednesday.
