Blue Devils power up

LISBON — The 11th-seeded Lisbon Blue Devils overpowered 23rd-seeded Bristol, 25-8, 25-8, 25-5, in a Division VII sectional opener Tuesday at Nace Gymnasium.

Lisbon has won eight of its last 12 matches to improve to 12-11.

Bristol –dressing seven players for the match — took a 2-1 lead in the first game as Lisbon had errors on its first two serves. The Blue Devils were in total control after that, highlighted by Abby Ammon’s five consecutive service winners that gave Lisbon a 14-3 lead in the first game.

Then Addison Anderson, Maddie Marshalek and Ammon had spikes and Marshalek hit a service winner to close out the opening game.

Marshalek totaled nine kills and Anderson six kills. Gionna Lenigar Alayna Householder, Hannah Davis each had three kills. Lilian Tenzek had six points with two aces. Stefanee Stacey collected three kills and 18 assists and Ammon made seven digs.

Lisbon travels to Willoughby Cornerstone Christian to play 17th-seeded Lordstown at 5 p.m. Thursday. In the second match, sixth-seeded Cornerstone Christian meets 21st-seeded Valley Christian at 7 p.m.

Bristol finishes with a 1-20 record, including a 3-2 win over Sebring. The Panthers lost their last 13 matches all by 3-0 scores. They were winless in the Northeastern Athletic Conference, which Leetonia is joining next school year.

East Palestine 3, Waterloo 0

EAST PALESTINE — It will only get harder from here for 26th-seeded East Palestine.

The Bulldogs scored a convincing 25-8, 25-14, 25-10 win over 28th-seeded Waterloo in a Division VI sectional opener Tuesday.

Kennedy Andre led the charge with 12 assists, 12 points, and six aces, giving her 102 aces on the season.

Also for East Palestine, Cami Kridler had 13 points, three aces, 6 digs and four assists; Marley Blythe nine points, five kills and nine digs; Amara Wilson seven points, eight kills and nine digs; Alyssa Dilling six points and 17 digs; and Destiney Burtyk four points, five kills, 4 points and two blocks.

The Bulldogs improve to 12-11, while Waterloo lost 12 of their last 13 matches to finish with a 5-18 record.

East Palestine will play at third-seeded Campbell Memorial at 5 p.m. Thursday. Campell is 19-3 with two losses to McDonald.

The other sectional final to follow is 23rd-seeded Southern Local vs. 25th-seeded Lake Center Christian at 7 p.m.

East Liverpool 3, John Glenn 1

EAST LIVERPOOL — The East Liverpool volleyball team got a big assist from senior Kamryn Yanni.

Yanni collected her 2,000th career assist in leading the fifth-seeded Potters past eighth-seeded John Glenn, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21, in a Division IV sectional final Tuesday at the Potter Fieldhouse.

Yanni totaled 47 assists and registered her 2,000th early in the second game on the way to 2,033. She also had three kills and an ace.

East Liverpool has won three matches in a row to improve to 16-7.

John Glenn lost for the sixth time in seven matches to finish at 10-13. John Glenn gave up a home sectional match to play the Potters, who they played in the summer.

Backing Yanni were Ava Green with 26 kills and three aces, Presley Jones 15 kills and five blocks, Kendall Martin six kills and an ace, Hailey Board three kills, two blocks and an ace, Ayla Riggle three assists and 22 digs and Addie Jones two blocks and one kill.

East Liverpool will play fourth-seeded St. Clairsville at 6 p.m. next Tuesday. St. Clairsville advanced with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-7 win over 13th-seeded Harrison Central.

St. Clairsville swept East Liverpool in three games on Sept. 27 when Yanni was out due to injury.

Ashtabula St. John 3, Leetonia 0

ASHTABULA — Top-seeded Ashtabula St. John made quick work of 25th-seeded Leetonia, 25-3, 25-11, 25-9, in a Division VII sectional opener Tuesday.

St. John (18-5), which was coming off consecutive losses, will play 14th-seeded Cuyahoga Heights at 5 p.m. next Tuesday at a site to be determined.

Leetonia went 0-19 for a second straight winless season.

John Marshall 3, Oak Glen 2

GLEN DALE, W.Va. — John Marshall avenged an early-season loss to Oak Glen with a 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 24-26, 15-10 victory Tuesday.

John Marhsall won for the fifth time in six matches to improve to 18-6-3 on the season, while Oak Glen moves to 20-9-3.

Averi Martin and Brooklyn Six each had 17 kills for the Golden Bears. Haylee Stewart had 11 kills and Brayley Lash seven kills. Mikalyn Balch had 52 assists and 13 digs, Keira Vick 18 digs and Layla Skavenski eight digs.

Oak Glen also won the junior varsity match, 25-23, 25-17, as Caetlyn Six, Audrina May, Zoey Caughey and Naomi Ayers all had four kills apiece. Kennedy Staley added two kills, Bryson Adams nine assists, Elynn Rogers eight assists and Katie Kliner 12 digs.

Oak Glen will host Morgantown next Tuesday.
