Auer keeps tradition going at Crestview

COLUMBIANA — The list of Columbiana County volleyball coaches with hundreds and hundreds of wins is a significant one.
All-time Ohio leader Dan McKinstry, Don Conser, Judi Gregory, Bob Shansky and Debbie Boyd are among those who built the foundation of some of the county’s best programs.
Well, the page is turning to a new era and you can count Crestview’s Alisha Auer among those names. The longtime Rebel coach reached her 400th win of her career as her team captured its 10th straight league title with a 25-10, 25-13, 25-11 win over LaBrae in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey Division finale on Tuesday.
“You know what, they were coaches when I played (in high school),” Alisha Auer said. “I don’t even put myself in that category. It’s just surreal that I have 400 wins. I’m just coaching night to night. I don’t really keep track.”
Alisha Auer said she registered her 300th against LaBrae when her daughter Grace, now a player at the University of Findlay, was on her team. She said she wanted to try to get to 400 with her daughter Lainy still on the team.
“I thought it would be really tough to do, but it happened,” Alisha Auer said. “I’m very blessed. We have had very good teams.”
In high school, Alisha was a record-breaking player for the Rebels before going off to play in college at Marshall and Cleveland State. She returned to lead the Rebel program in 2004 and outside of a year break in 2009 to take care of infant daughter Lainy, Alisha Auer has been the Rebels’ guiding light. She is 400-126 overall.
This season Crestview is 18-3 overall and 13-1 in the league.
“You build a program and it runs itself after a while,” Alisa Auer said. “You get these good kids and they are vested in the program. It just becomes a habit of winning.”
It was fitting that on Alisha Auer’s milestone night that daughter Lainy would also get some accolades.
Lainy’s 25 kills against the Vikings gave the senior 525 on the season, a school record. The previous mark was 508 set last season by current University of Pittsburgh freshman Abbey Emch.
“I think that’s crazy,” Lainy Auer said. “I wasn’t expecting that to get that many. Abbey was always an inspiration to me. I’ve grown up with her and I’ve played volleyball with her my whole life. To help her get those records and then to break them too is just really, really cool.”
The night before she set the school record for kills in a match with 46 in a five-set loss against Boardman. Emch held the previous mark of 34.
“It was something I wanted to do this season,” Lainy said about breaking Emch’s single-match record for kills. “It was a fun match and it just had to be the right match to (break the record).”
Lainy Auer started her career as a setter for two years and had to wait her turn behind her sister Grace and Emch to become the Rebels’ primary attacking option.
“She’s always had superstar hitters ahead of her,” Alisha Auer said. “This is the year where she really stepped up.”
The evening started in uncustomary fashion for the Rebels. After falling for the first time in 114 league matches to Garfield on Thursday and seeing a 62-match regular season and 69-match home win streak come to an end on Wednesday against Austintown Fitch, the Rebels were in a vulnerable position for the first time in years.
LaBrae actually had a chance to win a slice of the league title on the final league match of the season. A win for the Vikings would have caused a three-way split between Garfield and the Rebels.
But, Crestview was on its game on Thursday. Spectacular serving and the explosive firepower of Lainy Auer added up to a rather pedestrian victory where the Vikings never remotely challenged.
Setter Sophia Stewart was a key piece in the win with 30 assists and three aces. She said she was not concerned about the Rebels losing three out of their last four heading into Thursday.
“It was a struggle,” Stewart said. “We weren’t used to it throughout the season. At least (on Monday against Boardman), we pushed through and came together. Today we just played as a team to finish it off.”
The Rebels only had one practice during that run so there hasn’t been much time to dwell. Stewart said the team had been playing slow during that stretch.
“We need to play faster and be more awake,” Stewart said.
Alisha Auer said she knew there were going to be challenges heading into the season, so the losses were not a surprise.
“At the beginning of the season I looked at our schedule and I marked all of the matches we lost as potential tough games,” Alisha Auer said. “I knew we would have a tough time with Fitch. I knew Garfield was going to be good. Some of the ones I marked we won, some of them we lost. I’m pretty happy with where we are at right now.”
Also aiding in the win over LaBrae were Sophia Dattilio with five kills and a block, while libero Kerrigan Miller was sharp on the serve with six aces as well as 15 digs. Addison Wendell and Valerie Boyd had three aces each.
The Rebels won the jayvee match, 25-7, 25-18 to move to 19-2.
Kelsey Houp had five kills, eight aces and 10 digs for the winners. Phiatra Bradley added four kills and two aces.
Match notes
• Crestview hosts Girard on Thursday in the regular season finale.
• The Rebels got the No. 1 seed in the Div. V Northeast Ohio tournament draw on Sunday. The goal for the Rebels is still a deep run.
“We are just going to try to make it as far as we can,” Lainy Auer said. “Hopefully we can win districts again. That would be really cool.”
