Rebels ranked second

COLUMBIANA — Unbeaten Crestview is ranked second in Division V of the initial Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association state poll released Monday.

The Rebels are 9-0, winning 27 of 29 games this season. They will host Garrettsville Garfield today.

Adena is ranked first in Division V. Adena is 11-0 after winning 27 of 30 games.

In Division VII, Tuscarawas Central Catholic (8-2) is ranked eighth after beating West Branch in four games Saturday.

Two other area unbeatens also received votes in the state poll.

In Division IV, Beaver Local is 9-0 and has won all 25 games. The Beavers will host East Liverpool on Thursday.

In Division V, Columbiana is 7-0 and has won 19 straight games heading into today’s home match against Southern Local.

Householder stars for YSU

LORETTO, Pa. — Youngstown State senior Abbie Householder eclipsed 1,000 career kills and digs Saturday as the Penguins’ volleyball team beat Saint Francis (Pa.) and Siena on Saturday at the Altoona Grand Red Flash Classic.

Householder, a 6-foot senior outside hitter from Canfield High School, reached both milestones in a five-set win over St. Francis on Saturday night. Householder totaled 26 kills in the two matches. She becomes the sixth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

The Penguins are 4-2 and will play three matches over three days at the College of Charleston (S.C.) this weekend.

Grove City’s Klusch tops PAC

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Grove City volleyball player Kendra Klusch was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Klusch, a 6-foot junior middle hitter from Alliance, anchored Grove City’s defense at the net, averaging 1.30 blocks per set as the Wolverines went 3-0 at the Oberlin College Invitational at Philips Gymnasium. The Wolverines beat Wooster, Oberlin and Adrian (Mich.)

Grove City will open its home schedule at 6 p.m. today against perennial power Carnegie Mellon.
