Columbiana hosts EOAC
COLUMBIANA — The ninth Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference Cross Country Meet will be held today at the Ward Athletic Complex behind Columbiana High School.
The boys and girls will run a combined race and be scored separately. The race schedule includes fifth- and sixth-grade at 4:30 p.m., junior high at 5 p.m. and high school at 5:30 p.m.
Hickman finishes 20th
ZANESVILLE — Beaver Local’s Britton Hickman finished 20th on Monday at the Div. II boys district golf tournament at EagleSticks.
Hickman shot 79.
Indian Valley (291) and River View (295) were the two team state qualifiers, while Indian Valley’s Hayden Beaver (71) and Maysville’s Gator Nichols (71) were the two individual state qualifiers not on qualifying teams. In March, Nichols had 36 points to lead Maysville to a 74-67 win over Glenville in the Div. IV state basketball championship game.
The boys Div. II state golf tournament is set for Oct. 6-7 at NCR Country Club South Course in Kettering.
Rebels 8th in state poll
COLUMBIANA — Crestview’s volleyball team slipped to eighth in the latest Div. V Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
The Rebels (15-0) were fifth last week. The Rebels host Champion today and can clinch a share of the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Division with a win.
Chester reaches final
BOARDMAN — The Chester Old-Timers suffered their first playoff loss to Poland, 6-3, in the Championship double-elimination 50-and-over baseball playoffs on Sunday.
Dave Smith, Joe Krause, Rob Fester and Steve Nemic each had a hit for Chester.
Chester will play in the championship final at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Boardman High School.
Beavers, Potters play for sectional championship
DOVER — The Beaver Local doubles team of Kara Wain and Emily Wain will play East Liverpool’s LaNease Andrews and Lana Le for the Div. II girls tennis sectional championship today at Dover City Park.
Both doubles teams have already qualified for the district tournament after sectional play on Monday.
The district tournament is set for Oct. 8 and 11 at Columbus Academy in Gahanna. Two singles players and two doubles teams from that tournament will qualify for the state tournament.
Stokes has big match for Youngstown State
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Youngstown State freshman and Wellsville High School graduate Presley Stokes had 18 kills and 13 digs in Youngstown State University’s 25-16, 15-25, 25-11, 35-33 loss to Green Bay on Saturday.
The first three sets were lopsided as Green Bay built a 2-1 lead, but there were 14 ties and eight lead changes in the fourth set that extended well beyond the typical 25-point set.
Following its 25-11 win in the third, Green Bay scored six of the first seven points of the fourth set to build a 6-1 lead. Youngstown State got within one at 7-6, and the Penguins tied the score at 15-all. YSU took its first lead came at 20-19 on a Stokes kill, and Green Bay went ahead 24-22. The Penguins went on to fight off five match points, and they had four set points before Green Bay scored the final three points of the match.
Youngstown State will host three Horizon League matches at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center next week. The busy stretch on Rosselli Court will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as the Penguins play Robert Morris.
Ohio State student dies at stadium
COLUMBUS — A third-year Ohio State accounting student was found dead at Ohio Stadium on Friday morning.
William E. Myers of Fairfield, Connecticut, died after an incident according to Ohio State University. There were no details available that pointed to the cause of death.
Meyers, 19, co-founded a charity with his brother to donate new and used sports equipment to community centers. His LinkedIn said that his charity had donated more than 6,000 pieces of sports equipment to those in need.
Turkey shoots set
EAST LIVERPOOL — The Tri-State Coon Hunters and Sportsman Club at 2601 Irish Ridge Road in East Liverpool will be sponsoring turkey shoots on Saturdays, Oct. 4 and 18, and Nov. 1 and 15. They will start at 10 a.m.
