Warriors spiked by Canfield
CANFIELD — West Branch fell in straight sets to Canfield on Saturday, 25-20, 25-23, 25-14.
Kendelle Hoopes led the Warriors with nine points, three aces, three kills, four blocks and seven digs. Aislyn Ring finished with 10 assists, five points and a kill, while Ellyana Biskup added nine assists, four points and seven digs. Audrey Ring posted five kills and 11 blocks, and Chloey Sanor contributed four kills, 14 digs and two points.
In the junior varsity match, Canfield swept West Branch 25-10, 25-10.
West Branch (11-8) will host Boardman today.
Mount Union controls BW
BEREA — No. 2 Mount Union pulled away in the second half for a 42-23 win over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference football action.
Freshman quarterback Mikey Maloney completed 22 of 32 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns for the Purple Raiders (3-0, 1-0 OAC). Both of his scoring throws came in a pivotal stretch that swung the game in Mount Union’s favor.
With three seconds left in the first half, Maloney lofted a pass to senior tight end Wyatt Stiehl, who hauled it in one-handed at the back of the end zone to put Mount Union back on top 21-17. The Raiders then opened the second half with a 44-yard strike from Maloney to junior wide receiver Davion Grant, who finished with a season-high seven catches for 117 yards and his first 100-yard game.
Senior wideout Nick Turner added six catches for 91 yards. Running back Shaun Thomas ran for a season-high 84 yards and two touchdowns, while graduate back Darnell Williams opened the scoring with a 5-yard run to cap a 62-yard drive. Sophomore Kayden Minner added his first career score on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, senior linebacker Weston Arthur posted a career-high 10 tackles. Senior Kaleb Brown notched a sack, giving him 24.5 in his career to rank eighth in program history.
Mount Union outscored Baldwin Wallace (3-1, 2-1) by a 21-6 margin after halftime. The Purple Raiders extended their record streak to 150 straight conference road victories and 77 consecutive regular-season wins overall, the longest across all divisions of college football.
Mount Union hosts Otterbein for homecoming Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m.
Geiss takes ninth
DELAWARE — Heartland Christian senior Rebecca Geiss took ninth on Saturday at the prestigious Berlin Bear Den Dash at Olentangy Berlin High School.
Geiss registered a time of 18:06.64 against some of the best runners in the state.
Smithville senior Kaitlyn Carr won the championship with a 17:10.97 mark, while Athens’ Sophia Sxolosi was second in 17:10.98.
Lake Center Christian’s Gianna Ritchie, who will be in Geiss’s Div. IV district in the tournaments, placed seventh in 18:00.71.

CANFIELD –Beaver Local’s Luke Warrick took first place on Saturday at the Youngstown State University Cross Country Meet No. 2 at the YSU Gorby Family Cross Country Course.
Warrick finished in 17:34 to beat out 63 other runners. The Beavers won the meet as a team as well.
Beaver Local’s Hannah Ruberto finished fourth (21:33) in the girls high school race, while Salem’s Liliana Pimentel-Alexander was sixth (21:55). Columbiana’s Sidney Schlueter was seventh (21:55).
Maplewood’s girls won the title.
The meet was held in conjunction with a Youngstown State collegiate meet.
