National honor for Brungard
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State junior quarterback Beau Brungard was named the FCS National Offensive Player of the Week and the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week following his record-setting performance in the 56-17 victory over Robert Morris at Stambaugh Stadium on Saturday.
Brungard set a school and conference record for rushing yards in a game by a quarterback with 264 yards on just 10 carries against the Colonials. Brungard rushed for scores of 72, 28, 20 and four yards in the victory. His longest run of the afternoon was a 78-yard scamper to set up another score.
He had 386 yards of total offense while rushing for four touchdowns and passing for another. He played just 33:09 of the contest before exiting with YSU leading 49-3 with 12:51 left in the third quarter.
His yardage total broke the previous conference record set by Western Kentucky’s Donte Pimpleton (245) against Illinois State in 2001.
His total tied for the third most in a game in school history and was the most since Marcus Mason had 265 yards in 2005.
Brungard –who guided Springfield Local High School to state runner-up finishes in 2019 and 2020 — leads the FCS in total rushing yards (409), rushing yards per game (204.5) and rushing touchdowns (six). He ranks second in the nation in yards per carry (10.76).
The Penguins play their first road game of the season when they visit Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
