Dunn leads Beaver Local into OVAC final
CALCUTTA — Beaver Local’s girls soccer team punched its ticket into the OVAC Class 4A finals with a 6-2 semifinal win over Weir High on Wednesday at Beaver Local.
The Beavers have won six straight and will play St. Clairsville at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the OVAC Class 4A final at Wheeling Island Stadium.
St. Clairsville (5-4-2) beat Cambridge 5-0 in the other semifinal on Wednesday.
Beaver Local (11-1) had beaten Weir 1-0 in a regular season meeting on Sept. 18 as well.
Beaver Local led 2-0 at the half on a goal from Peyton Dunn that came seven minutes into the game and a Leah Steward goal with 11 seconds left in the first half.
Dunn increased the lead with a goal eight minutes into the second half. She followed that up with a goal with 5:39 left in the game. Steward increased the pressure on Weir with a goal with 2:43 left in the game and Dunn capped the win with a goal with one second left.
Ally Wright added two assists for the Beavers, while Stewart also had an assist. Tatum Duncan had nine saves in goal.
Beaver Local’s previous OVAC girls soccer titles came in 2004 and 2006.
Weir fell to 4-7-2.
Wheeling Central 10, United 0
WHEELING, W.Va. — United exited the OVAC Class 1-3A girls soccer tournament with a 10-0 loss to Wheeling Central on Wednesday.
United is 7-5-2 and is scheduled to host Rootstown on Oct. 6.
Central (12-1) advances to Saturday’s final against Steubenville Central set for noon on Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Beaver Local 2, Union Local 0
CALCUTTA — Beaver Local’s boys soccer team got two goals from Brandon Smith in a 2-0 win over Union Local on Wednesday in an OVAC boys Class 4A soccer semifinal.
St. Clairsville won the other semifinal 3-0 over Linsly.
Beaver Local (9-3) will play for the title at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Clairsville.
The two teams met on Aug. 26 with St. Clairsville (9-1-1) winning 1-0.
Beaver Local has won the Class 4A title the previous two seasons, the school’s only OVAC boys soccer titles.
Crestview 4, LaBrae 0
LEAVITTSBURG — Crestview’s girls soccer team was on target with a 4-0 win against LaBrae on Wednesday.
Shelby Wellman scored on an assist by Adri Hodge, while Haley Harbour had a goal off a corner kick by Isabella Novak. Novak chipped in an unassisted goal as did Hodge.
Clarice Harroff had one save in goal.
The Rebels are 2-7-3 and host Salem on Tuesday.
Crestview 10, LaBrae 1
LEAVITTSBURG — Danny Novak had three goals as Crestview’s boys soccer team downed LaBrae 10-1 on Wednesday. Jaden Moore added three assists. Alex Beveridge, Carson Barber and Aiden Deem had two goals each. Carson Crable had a single goal. Jackson Dolan and Deem had single assists.
Salem 1, Marlington 0
ALLIANCE — Salem’s girls soccer team topped Marlington 1-0 on Wednesday.
Karlie Sampson scored the Quaker goal on an assist from Maddy Andres. Paige Menough had 12 saves.
Salem is 9-2-3 and will be at Crestview on Monday.
East Liverpool 8, Magnolia 0
EAST LIVERPOOL — Renee Wright had three goals to lead East Liverpool’s girls soccer team to an 8-0 win over Magnolia on Wednesday.
Adelyne McCready added two goals and two assists. Julianna Burkett, Cheyenne Taggart and Alana DeSmith also had goals.
Wright, Emily Hernandez, Burkett and Alanna McGonigal had assists.
East Liverpool is 4-6-2 and will be at Steubenville on Tuesday.
Steubenville CC 1, Columbiana 0
GREENFORD — Steubenville Central knocked off Columbiana 1-0 in an OVAC Class 1-3A girls soccer semifinal on Wednesday at South Range High School.
The game was moved to South Range due to poor field conditions at Columbiana.
Columbiana is 5-4-3, while the Crusaders are 5-3-3 and will play Wheeling Central for the title at noon on Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium.
