National honor for United’s Andrea

United Local High School graduate Maddox Andrea was recently named the United Soccer Coaches Association High School Scholar All-American Player of the Year.
HANOVERTON — Maddox Andrea, a recent graduate of United High School, has been named the 2024-25 High School Scholar All-American Player of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches Association.
The national honor recognizes Andrea as the top high school soccer student-athlete in the country for his combined excellence in the classroom and on the field.
“Being named Scholar All-American Player of the Year means the world to me,” Andrea said. “It’s proof that all the early mornings, late nights, and sacrifices were worth it. I wouldn’t be here without the people who believed in me–my teachers who challenged me, my teammates who pushed me, my coaches who guided me, and my family who never stopped supporting me.”
Andrea, who is part of the Type 1 diabetic student-athlete community, finished his high school career with 173 goals and 46 assists. He tied the school’s single-season record with 55 goals and added 11 assists his senior year, leading United to a 17-3 record and a regional semifinal appearance. He scored in all 20 games, including 15 multi-goal performances.
He was named a two-time High School All-American, a four-time All-Ohio selection and twice received both the Mr. Mahoning Valley and District Player of the Year honors from the Mahoning Valley High School Soccer Coaches Association. Andrea also earned Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division V Player of the Year and competed for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ USL League 2 team.
Academically, Andrea graduated summa cum laude with a 3.93 GPA. He received the U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award, the President’s Education Award and was a member of the National Honor Society.
He will attend Ohio Wesleyan University this fall where he plans to major in finance and play collegiate soccer. Andrea was awarded the Branch Rickey Scholarship, the Provost Scholarship and the OWU Recognition Award.
Andrea is one of 107 high school student-athletes nationwide recognized as Scholar All-Americans this year–63 girls and 44 other boys. He is the only male player to earn the Player of the Year designation.
He will be honored at the United Soccer Coaches All-America Ceremony on Jan. 17, 2026, during the association’s annual convention in Philadelphia.
