Minerva charts course

SALEM — The two-time defending state champion Minerva girls cross country team plans on making another run.

The Lions featured the top five runners to capture the 23rd annual Salem Early Bird Cross Country Invitational going away Saturday.

The Minerva girls scored 15 points, followed by Salem with 41. Salem won the meet the previous four years.

Minerva junior Makenzie Beavers topped the 82-runner girls field, covering the 3.1-mile course at Waterworth Memorial Park in 19 minutes, 25.82 seconds.

Right behind her for the Lions were sophomore Tateum Richard, freshman Charlie Galley, sophomore Addison Keyser and senior Gabby Lupshu.

The Minerva girls have won two straight Ohio Division II state titles and three in the last four.

Right after Minerva’s top five were four Salem runners –senior Laura Hovorka, junior Emily Sinsley, freshman Addison Hopple and junior Cassidy Wallace.

The Minerva boys, led by freshman Anderson Scott, also won with 31 points. The Lions had four of the top nine runners.

Scott topped the 116-runner boys field in 16:28.97, finishing ahead of Minerva senior Rowen Hoffee in second, East Liverpool senior Maddox Roach in third and Salem junior Luke Stephens in fourth.
