Nign sets sights on more medals

COLUMBUS — Beaver Local senior Savannah Nign got her first medal in the girls wheelchair shot put Friday. She will be going for three more Saturday.

Nign captured third place in the shot put at the Ohio high school state track meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

She had a personal-best 13-feet-2 1/4.

“Throughout the season I threw from my wheelchair,” Nign said.”Today I threw from my throwing chair.”

Five of her six throws went more than 13 feet.

Massillon Jackson sophomore Abby LaPole repeated as the state champion and set the state meet record and stadium record with a toss of 19-11. She surpassed the old mark four times.

Nign will go for three more state medals on Saturday as she competes in the 100, 200 and 800 events. She comes in with the best time in the 800 race.

None of her events had preliminaries due to limited numbers.

“I like having prelims because it’s a warmup for finals, but my full best will go into the finals (Saturday),” Nign said.
