HANOVERTON — United didn’t waste any time after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning Wednesday.

The first seven Eagles reached base and scored in leading fifth-seeded United past 23rd-seeded Southern Local, 18-3, in five innings in a Division VI sectional final.

United won its third sectional softball title in school history and improved to 20-6 on the season.United will host 10th-seeded McDonald (12-5) in a district semifinal at 5 p.m. Monday.

Southern drops to 8-13, including three losses to United this month.

Nine Eagles drove in runs, led by Chloe Angelo with a two-run homer over the left field fence for her fifth round-tripper of the season. Angelo had two hits and scored three runs.

Callie Koons went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Grace Coffe and Caitlyn Roller both had two RBIs.

Peyton Kekel settled down after giving up three runs, one earned, and three walks in the first inning. Kekel allowed only three hits, no runs and no walks in the final four innings. She finished with five strikeouts.

Giulia Chiarvavalloti’s RBI single gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Gianna Pecorelli and Makenna Jones also had a hit and scored a run.

Addy Martin took the loss, giving up five earned runs with two strikeouts and six walks in four innings.

United came right back with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 7-3 lead after four walks and singles by Angelo, Coffee and Kendall Erb.

The Eagles added three runs in the third inning and eight more in the fourth for an 18-3 lead.

McDonald advanced by beating 24th-seeded Kirtland, 10-0, Wednesday. McDonald has won six straight games and has given up two runs or less in 11 of its victories this season.

Beaver Local 7, Cambridge 1

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local put six runs across in the first inning and cruised to a 7-1 victory over Cambridge on Wednesday in a Div. IV sectional contest in the East District.

Calleigh Eells had two hits and two RBIs for the fourth seeded Beavers, while Tatum Duncan had two hits and an RBI. Brylee Curtis added two hits.

Lora Reeder had a double.

Addie Thurik was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

Beaver Local (18-5) hosts No. 5 seed Indian Valley on Tuesday in a district semifinal.

Lake Center 12, East Palestine 6

EAST PALESTINE –Lake Center Christian ended East Palestine’s softball season with 12-6 win on Wednesday in a Div. VI sectional contest.

Maddison Foster had a double and an RBI for the 20th seeded Bulldogs, while Kennedy Andre added two hits and an RBI.

Lake Center, the 21st seed, scored eight runs in the fifth inning to open the game up.

Andre took the loss with a strikeout and walk in seven innings.

Lake Center will travel to top-seeded Mogadore on Monday for a district semifinal.

East Palestine is 11-11.

Mathews 12, Wellsville 2

VIENNA — No. 1 seeded Mathews breezed past Wellsville 12-2 on Wednesday in a Div. VII sectional contest.

Wellsville, the 17th seed, finishes the season 8-14.

Mathews will host No. 14 Windham on Monday in the district semifinal.

Windham 15, Heartland 3

UNITY — No. 14 seed Windham downed Heartland Christian 15-3 in five innings on Wednesday in a Div. VII sectional contest.

The Lions scattered five hits through the lineup.

Emily McDowell went all five innings for the Lions and had four strikeouts and two walks.

Heartland is 6-9 and is supposed to host Lake Center Christian in a regular season game today.

Windham will head to top-seed Mathews on Monday in the district semifinal.

Lisbon suspended

LISBON — Lisbon has work to do if it is to come back on Brookfield in a Div. VII sectional contest.

The Warriors, the 16th seed, led the Blue Devils 8-0 in the fourth inning after heavy rain and storms suspended the contest.

Lisbon, the eighth seed, will resume the game at 5 p.m. today at Lisbon’s Dickey Complex.

Crestview suspended

COLUMBIANA — Crestview’s softball team led 8-4 over Smithville with one out in the bottom of the sixth before the game was suspeneded due to rain and lightning on Wednesday in a Div. VI sectional contest.

Crestview, the ninth seed, will resume the game against the 27th seeded Smithies today.

Leetonia forfeits

Leetonia forfeited its Div. VII sectional contest at Southington on Wednesday.

The No. 4 seeded Wildcats advance to host No. 10 seed Lowellville on Monday in the district semifinal.

Leetonia, the 24th seed, is 0-16.

University 11, Oak Glen 7

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s softball team dropped an 11-7 decision to University on Wednesday in a regular season game.

Addie Smith had three hits for Oak Glen.

Mattie Carney added two hits and three RBIs.

Carney took the loss with a strikeout and walk in an inning.

Oak Glen (25-10) will travel to St. Mary’s on Friday for the first game of a Region 1 championship series.
