COLUMBUS — Beaver Local’s wrestling team didn’t disappoint on Sunday at the state wrestling tournament at the Schottenstein Center.

Senior Justuce Fisher, freshman Jake Hughes and sophomore Evan Ours all took third, while junior Robert Buchheit was sixth and senior Kane Curran was seventh.

As a team Beaver Local collected 68.5 points which was good enough for fourth in Div. II.

On Saturday, Fisher faced off against unbeaten Jarreau Walker of Streetsboro in the 106-pound semifinal, but it was all Walker in a 21-8 major decision. Walker later won the weight class on Sunday. Fisher (38-9) got third by beating Wapakoneta’s Zane Russell, 6-2.

Hughes, a decorated wrestler at the junior high and club level, shot into the 150-pound semifinal in his first state tournament on Saturday, but Watterson’s James Lindsay ended his run at a state title with a 3-1 decision. On Sunday, Hughes (47-6) came back with a vengeance with technical fall wins over Perry’s Chance Schlauch and Athens’ Simon Inboden to get third.

Ours got his third-place at 165 by dusting off two of the Eastern Buckeye Conference’s best. In the consolation semifinal, Ours (45-7) beat Minerva’s Hunter Dietrich 8-3 and then bested Salem senior Aiden Stecker 8-5 in the third-place match.

The highly ranked Stecker (49-6) took a 3-1 stumble to Minerva’s Hunter Dietrich in the quarterfinal on Saturday to end his run in the championship bracket. Dietrich also beat Stecker in a regular season match.

Stecker’s fourth-place finish is Salem’s highest since Nelson Cope finished third at 119 pounds in 1993.

Buchheit was knocked off by eventual 138-pound state champ Aiden King of Hartley in the second round on Saturday but battled back to get to the consolation semifinal where he lost to New Lexington’s Tyson Spicer. In the fifth-place match, Buchheit (39-7) was pinned in 2:01 by Clear Fork’s Anthony Oscar.

Curran (28-7) defeated Howland’s Christopher Mijavec 12-5 in the 190-pound semifinal match.

East Liverpool senior Tristian Eckles (45-4) capped his career by taking seventh at 120 with a 4-1 sudden victory win over West Holmes’ Peyton Martin.

In Div. III, Southern senior Johnny Bailey (46-4) secured seventh-place at 190 with a 14-7 win over East Knox’s Blake Elliott. Bailey is the second straight Indian to place at state after Gabe Blissenbach placed third at 175 last season.
