Blazer makes debut
BETHANY, W.Va. — Freshman forward Addy Blazer started in her collegiate debut at Bethany College on Saturday.
Blazer, a key player on United’s three straight Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title teams, played 20 minutes in Saturday’s season-opening 78-47 loss to Marietta at Hummel Field House.
She scored four points on 2-of-6 shooting, with two offensive rebounds and one steal.
Senior guard Alyssa Serensky, a Western Reserve High School graduate, added three points and one assist in 10 minutes off the bench.
Bethany will host Thiel at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday
River View wins state
COLUMBUS –The Warsaw River View boys soccer team claimed the Div. IV state soccer title with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Worthington Christian on Monday at Historic Crew Stadium.
Cael Summers found Hayden Walters for the game-winner with 3:19 left in the second overtime.
River View (21-1-2) defeated its seven tournament foes — including Beaver Local and East Liverpool –by a combined 29-3.
Worthington Christian ended its campaign at 14-4-1.
It’s the first state title in soccer from a school in the Eastern District.
Lawhorn triumphs
BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. — Lisbon resident Joe Lawhorn won the fixed gear category during last week’s Bicycling Endurance Time Trials.
Lawhorn is the race director for the gravel road Coal Country Roubaix race in the Lisbon.
A former Marine, Lawhorn broke the world record for most miles ridden on a fixed gear bicycle in 2017, riding 415 miles in 24 hours.
This year’s event was cut short due to strong winds and a sandstorm but Lawhorn nonetheless prevailed.
The second annual Coal Country Roubaix is set for April 26, and volunteers are needed, Lawhorn said. Interested people can contact him on the race’s Facebook page.
Youngstown State routed on road
COLUMBUS — Aaron Bradshaw and John Mobley Jr. each scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures as No. 21 Ohio State went on an early run and then crushed Youngstown State 81-47 on Monday night.
Ohio State played outstanding defense, holding a Youngstown State team with mostly new players to 24% shooting.
The Buckeyes shot 55%, with Bruce Thornton scoring 12, Meechie Johnson Jr. adding 11, including three 3-pointers, and Sean Stewart 10.
Bradshaw was 5 for 8 and had eight rebounds. Mobley was 3 for 4 from beyond the arc as the Buckeyes hit 46% of their long shots.
Cris Carroll paced the Penguins with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Ty Harper and 7-foot-3 Gabe Dynes each added nine points.
