Evanko assists in Beavers’ victory

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local senior Aleia Evanko makes the most of her opportunities.

Evanko totaled 16 assists as she reached 1,000 assists in her career as the Beavers beat Carrollton, 25-12, 27-25, 25-13, Monday.

“There are very few athletes who have the opportunity to earn this honor, not to mention that Aleia has earned this running a 6-2 offense from her sophomore to senior year, where she is only setting for three rotations as well as also leading in the front row over the past three years,” Beaver Local coach Sarah Lowe said. “In my 16 years of coaching, this has been our first athlete to achieve this goal and as a team we are very proud to honor her this evening.”

Evanko also had three kills and 13 digs as the Beavers improved to 14-4 on the season.

Also for the Beavers, Adison Ketchum had 11 kills and two blocks; Jocelyn Pomeroy nine kills, three aces and nine digs; Bria Boyd 12 assists, two aces and five digs; Lily Schreiber seven kills, two aces and six digs; Giada Williams five kills; Karsyn Boyer three kills, three assists and 18 digs; and Danica Germanovich two aces and seven digs.

Carrollton drops to 6-11.

Beaver Local also won the junior varsity match, 25-22, 25-16. For the Beavers, Sydney McNear had 10 kills and three digs, Addie Thurik five kills, 13 assists, seven aces, and six digs, Aubrey Stewart eight digs, Giada Williams five kills, Bailee Baker three kills and three digs, Calleigh Eells two kills, Perri Gilson 17 digs, Leah Schreiber six digs and Taylor Pease nine assists and three digs.

The Beaver Local freshmen also won, 25-18, 25-18. Leading the Beavers were Leah Schreiber with six aces, three assists and six digs, Madison Poppelriter four aces, four kills and four digs, Ava Nocella 18 digs and Calleigh Eells three aces, two assists and nine digs.

The Beavers play at Steubenville on Tuesday beginning with the freshmen at 4:30 p.m.

Columbiana 3, Leetonia 0

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana captured its sixth straight victory by downing Leetonia, 25-11, 25-15, 25-11, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Monday.

The Clippers improve to 16-1 overall and 10-0 in the EOAC, while the Bears drop to 0-13 and 0-8 in league play.

Cameron Perkins led Columbiana with 19 points, three aces, 18 assists and five digs. Danica Halas had 11 points, four aces, six kills and two digs, Kelsey Cameron seven points and nine kills, Ellie Jackson four points, six kills, six assists and three digs, Landy Smith five kills and Hannah Hitchcock three points and two aces.

Columbiana won the junior varsity match, 25-7, 25-16, as Layla McCarthy had 17 points, nine aces and two digs. Evy Rapp added nine points, five aces, six kills and two digs, Hailee Gomoll three points and two aces and Eva Waller nine assists.

The teams will play in Leetonia today.

Heartland 3, Lisbon 0

COLUMBIANA — Lisbon dropped its second straight match as Heartland Christian scored a 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 victory Monday.

Heartland improves to 11-5, while Lisbon moves to 10-5.

Lisbon leaders were Stefanee Stacey with three aces, 28 assists, seven kills and six digs, Cheyanne Nez 16 kills, Izzy Lannon eight kills and eight digs, Abby Ammon five aces and 19 digs, Maddy Marshalek six kills and 15 digs and Gionna Lenigar four kills.

Heartland also won the junior varsity match, 25-15, 25-18. For the Blue Devils, Addison Anderson had three aces, three kills and 13 digs, Bridgett Newbold five assists, two kills and six digs, Lexi Roush nine digs, Brooklynn Klein two kills and four digs; and Alayna Householder two digs.

Lisbon will play at Wellsville today.

Wellsville 3, Toronto 0

TORONTO — Wellsville rolled over Toronto, 25-19, 25-10, 25-15, Monday.

The Tigers improve to 12-4 and will host Lisbon today.

Presley Stokes totaled 19 kills, 11 assists and seven digs and Bella Poppelriter 10 kills, four aces, 12 assists and 12 digs for the Tigers. Aleena Owens had five kills, Myleigh Jackson two aces, four assists and 10 digs and Olivia Edison five assists and three digs. Kaylee Kazee and Kenzie Bosco each had two digs.

“It was a good night for us,” Wellsville coach Sherry Allen said. “The girls worked well together. They are learning to talk and to trust each other.”

Toronto drops to 4-13.

Southern 3, Chaney 0

SALINEVILLE — Southern Local made quick work of Youngstown Chaney, 25-10, 25-10, 25-16, in a pink game Monday.

Brooke Boyle served 16 points and Cheyenne Bennett had 15 points and 10 assists for the Indians. Gianna Pecorelli had eight points and four kills, Allyssa Shroades seven points, five kills and 11 assists, Gigi Rodgers four kills and two blocks, Kiah Sloan four kills and Kennedy Lewis 10 digs.

Southern improves to 8-8 and will play at Valley Christian today.

The Indians also won the junior varisty match, 25-15, 27-25. Breena Frischkorn and Mary Beadnell each had five kills for the Indians. Hailey Maines had four kills and nine assists and Delaney Beadnell eight assists.

Girard 3, West Branch 2

BELOIT — Girard finished what it started at West Branch on Monday.

The Indians rallied in the last two games for a 25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-9 victory.

Girard won its sixth straight match to improve to 14-3. West Branch drops to 14-5.

Girard trailed 8-5 in the fourth game and 3-0 in the fifth game.

The Indians rallied to take a 15-9 lead in the fourth game before West Branch tied it at 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22. Girard scored the last three points to send the match into a deciding fifth game.

After West Branch scored the first three points, Girard came back for an 8-4 lead. The teams were tied at 8-8 and Girard led 10-8. West Branch pulled within 10-9 before Girard scored the last five points of the match.

Crestview frosh win

COLUMBIANA –Makayla McKee and Kelsey Houp each served seven aces in leading Crestview past Youngstown East, 25-13, 25-13, in freshmen volleyball action Monday.

McKee collected 14 points and Houp nine. Sophia Noling had five kills.

Crestview will host Champion today.

Oak Glen wins two

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The Oak Glen volleyball team won two more volleyball matches, sweeping Parkersburg South and Tyler at home on Saturday.

The Golden Bears beat Parkersburg South, 25-10, 25-14, and also topped Tyler in two games. Tyler beat Parkersburg South in three games.

Oak Glen (18-2-3) will play at Union Local today. Union Local is ranked fourth in the Ohio Division V state poll.
