East Liverpool’s Roach leads way at Suburban

CANFIELD -- East Liverpool junior Maddox Roach highlighted area runners at the Suburban League Cross Country Championships on Tuesday.

Roach finished fourth out of 204 boys finishers, covering the 3.1-mile course at the Canfield Fairgrounds in 17 minutes, 14 seconds.

Beaver Local sophomore Luke Warrick was 14th, Southern Local senior Logan McCartney was 15th and East Liverpool junior Brody Vulgamore was 16th.

Beaver Local senior Jeremiah Moore was running near the front, but dropped out in the second half of the race because he wasn't feeling well.

Defending girls race champion and Division III state champion Rebecca Geiss of Heartland Christian was the pacesetter for freshman teammate Gabby McDowell, who finished 28th in a personal-best 23:26. Geiss, who ran her workout on Tuesday morning, finished 29th. Her next race will be the Columbiana County Meet in Salem on Tuesday.

Beaver Local junior Hannah Ruberto topped area girls by placing ninth out of 148 finishers. Columbiana sophomore Maddie Jackson was 18th and Southern sophomore Mara Miller was 20th.

The Canfield boys and McDonald girls won team titles.

The highest-finishing area teams were the Beaver Local boys and Columbiana girls, both in seventh place.
