More state qualifiers
CRESTON -- There were two local at-large state qualifiers after fifth-place finishes at the Norwayne Division III regional track meet Friday.
United junior Danny Milburn in the 200-meter dash (a personal-best 22.62 seconds) and the Columbiana boys 1600-meter relay team of Liam Surgenavic, Ian Less, Parker Bush and Aidan Radcliff (3:27.62) each gained one of the two at-large berths in their events.
They will compete in the Division III state semifinals Friday night at Dayton's Welcome Stadium.
YSU baseball takes second
DAYTON -- Youngstown State finished as runner-up in the Horizon League Baseball Championship.
Second-seeded Northern Kentucky captured its first Horizon League championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by downing sixth-seeded Youngstown State, 23-5, Saturday at Nischwitz Field.
The Norse trailed 2-1 until scoring seven runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth.
Northern Kentucky improves to 35-22. YSU finishes at 16-44.
Junior pitcher Lane Rhodes, a Salem High School graduate, took the loss in his first start in more than a month. He held the Norse to three runs before exiting in the bottom of the fourth. The Norse scored five runs after Rhodes left to take an 8-2 lead.
Rhodes' line was six earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Freshman Gavin Wilms, another Salem High School graduate, gave up two runs and two walks in one inning of relief.
Junior left fielder Chase Franken, a Columbiana High School graduate, was 0-for-3 at the plate and gave up six earned runs in one inning on the mound on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.
