Indians advance to final
DALTON — Southern Local’s softball team came ready to play and it paid off in a 5-1 upset win over Southington on Monday in a Div. IV district semifinal at Dalton High School.
No. 11 seeded Southern (11-7) scored the upset for the second straight tournament game as No. 6 Southington came in having beaten Southern 10-0 in last season’s district semifinal.
Southern will meet No. 2 Mogadore in the district final at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Dalton High School. Mogadore beat Grand Valley 19-0 in the first semifinal on Monday afternoon.
Southern scored four runs in the fourth inning to break open the game. One came in on an error then Destiny Huffman plated two on a triple. Alexis Ensinger added an RBI single.
Cheyenne Buzzard added three hits and an RBI. McKenna Jones had two hits including a triple.
Ensinger worked the first six innings as she struck out 12 and walked three. Rylee Hawkins wrapped the final inning with two strikeouts and three walks.

BELOIT — The repreive granted by Saturday’s rainy weather worked in West Branch’s favor on Monday.
Branch came back from a 4-0 deficit following the suspension in the bottom of the second inning to score an 11-6 win over Ashtabula Edgewood on Monday in a Div. II sectional final.
No. 7 seeded West Branch advances to meet No. 1 seed Aurora at 2 p.m. today in a Div. II district semifinal at Jefferson Little League Complex.
West Branch tallied five runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead and then held on the rest of the way against the No. 13 seed.
The top four West Branch players at the top of the order had two hits each. Josie Miliken had a triple single and an RBI. Ellie Tucker had a single and double. Mati Hawk had two doubles and an RBI. Sara Schmidt had a double single and RBI.
Addi Craven had a home run and three RBIs. Klary McKay had a double and RBI, while Libbie Davis also had a double and RBI.
McKay shook off her rough start to strikeout seven and walk five in gaining the complete-game win. She threw 125 pitches spread out over the two game days.
Aurora is ranked fifth in Div. II in the state coaches’ poll.

Canton South 1
CANTON — Caitlynn Pleska had a home run and two RBIs, while Maryn Hepler had two hits as Columbiana’s softball team beat Canton South 2-1 in a regular season game on Monday.
Mackenzi Gamble got the win with seven strikeouts and a walk in three innings.
Columbiana is 24-4 and will play Rootstown at 6:15 p.m. today in the Div. III district semifinal at South Range.
This was Columbiana’s final regular season game.
