KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- West Virginia University senior and Oak Glen High School graduate Peyton Hall got a measure of revenge on Saturday in the 165-pound seventh-place match at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at the T-Mobile Center.
Hall (31-9) erased the memory of a second-round loss to Nebraska's Antrell Taylor with a 2-1 victory to finish seventh. In the defensive battle, Hall scored late with a 'riding time' point to secure the win over Taylor. The Husker defeated Hall 11-9 in the second round match on Thursday.
Hall is the ninth West Virginia wrestler to earn All-American status twice or more. Hall, a four-time NCAA qualifier, was seventh in 2022 at the same weight class.
The Mountaineer could go for another podium spot next season if he chooses to entertain using his last year of eligibility.
In the championship match at 165, Penn State's Mitchell Mesenbrink was trying to finish off a dream freshman season against Iowa State's David Carr, rallying from a 7-2 hole to make it 8-8 by the end of the third period. But Carr, who had defeated two-time defending champion Keegan O'Toole on the way to the final, had built up enough riding time to get the point he needed for the victory.
"I just kept telling myself, just focus in. Keep wrestling hard," said Carr, who won the 157-pound title in 2021 and finished third and second the past two years. "And it feels awesome. It feels amazing to end my career on top."
Carr, a Massillon Perry High School graduate, is a four-time Ohio high school state champion.
