Beavers run away with Hoppel title

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local had five individual champions and ran away with the team title in the 46th annual Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling Tournament held before a large crowd in the Beavers’ gymnasium Saturday evening.

It marked the Beavers’ second consecutive team championship in the ever-popular regular-season wrestling tournament which uses a pool format.

“All of our kids competed hard and they did really well,” praised Beaver Local head coach Johnny McComas, a former mat standout with the Beavers during his prep days. “We had a placer in the top four in every weight class but 113, because we have a forfeit there right now.”

Beaver Local won the trophy in the 13-team tourney with 319 points, outdistancing second-place Austintown Fitch which finished with 248.5 points.

“It’s nice to win in front of your home crowd, obviously,” smiled McComas. “It’s good competition here with Austintown — and Oak Glen brought some good guys.”

Other area team finishes included Oak Glen (third, 196.5 points), Edison (fifth, 146), Southern Local (11th 80) and Crestview (12th, 30).

Beaver Local’s 132-pound sophomore standout Bobby Buchheit, ranked fourth in the state according to the wrestling website borofanohio.net, was one of the Beavers’ five individual champions and was voted by the coaches as the Most Valuable Wrestler of the tourney.
