CRESTON -- United senior Kaleb Nastari is a threat to break the state record in every race.
Nastari broke his own state record for the second straight week and is on pace to defend his state title in the 800 meters.
His winning time of 1 minute, 49.19 seconds at the Norwayne Division III regional meet broke the mark of 1:49.31.
"(Breaking the state record) really surprised me," Nastari said. "I wanted to come out here and break my last year record of 1:51 and I did that. So, I'm happy."
He won by more than 6 seconds.
"(The race) wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be with the headwind," Nastari said. "It really didn't become that big of a challenge today…As soon as I get on the line and the gun goes off, everything just kind of goes blank and I just go."
The top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet June 2-3 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
"I'm hoping to break the all-time state record of Nick Plant -- I think it's a 1:48.6," Nastari said. "I'm hoping to get that, but I'm happy how my season is going so far."
He wasn't finished as Nastari helped the Eagles' 1600 relay team win the regional title.
He joined Wyatt Medure, Jenson Baker and Nick Hardgrove on the winning team that ran 3:26.09, the best in the county this year and just a second off the school record.
There were three more state qualifiers from Columbiana County.
Heartland Christian freshman Rebecca Geiss was second in the girls 3200-meter run in a personal-best 10:56.64.
Southern senior Gavin Tribelo gained the fourth and final state berth in the boys shot put by a half-inch.
Tribelo held on the fourth spot at 50-feet-6 1/4. after McDonald sophomore Jake Reckner threw 50-5 3/4 on his first attempt in the finals.
The Columbiana boys 400 relay team of also advanced. The Clippers' squad of Aiden Radcliff, Joe Guido, Caleb Buchheit and Liam Surgenavic finished third in 43.95 seconds, the best in the county this season.
