SALEM -- State champions Kaleb Nastari from United and Caleb White from Beaver Local are looking for more.
Both opened their seasons with victories at the 29th F.E. Cope Invitational on a wet Friday at Sebo Stadium.
White -- the 2021 Division II state champion in the 100 meters and two-time state runner-up in the 200 meters -- ran away with victories in the three sprints Friday. He swept the 100 dash (11.16 seconds), 200 dash (22.82) and 400 dash (51.48).
Nastari -- the 2022 Division III state champion in the 800 meters -- captured first place in the 1600 in a personal-best 4:21.43, just one second off the school record. Salem junior Will Madison wasn't far behind in third place (4:32.50).
The Salem girls won two relays on the way to a fourth straight team title with 120 points. Medina was second with 107.
The Quakers showed their strength in the relays, getting wins in the 800 relay with Angie Hoffaker, Ella Double, Zoie Reid and Rylee Hutton (1:51.35) and the 1600 relay with Ella Double, Maggie Hopple, Annika Murray and Rylee Hutton (4:11.41).
Salem's Klaire Jaquette, Jill Pieren, Maggie Hall and Megan Stafford were second in the 3200 relay (10:44.32), while Angie Hoffaker, Zoie Reid, Mikaylynn Murphy and Raelinn Pim were fourth in the 400 relay (52.92).
Hall also was second in the 800 run (2:28.45) and second in the 1600 run (5:25.05). Salem junior Megan Stafford was fourth in both events (2:33.15 and 5:31.98). Defending Division III state champion Caleigh Richards from Maplewood won the 1600 run (5:14.11).
Other top area girls finishers included Hutton, second in the long jump (16-4) and third in the 200 dash (27.02); Salem junior Makenna Rudy, second in the shot put (38-11 1/2); Salem senior Kami Rohm, second in the high jump (4-10).
Salem sophomore Maggie Hoppel third (62.1) and Salem senior Ella Double fourth (62.77) in the 400 dash; Salem junior Kaylee Carlisle, fourth in the discus (103-2); and Beaver Local senior Kristin Sabatini, fourth in the high jump (4-8).
Austintown Fitch ended Salem's run of five straight team titles. Fitch was first with 129 points. Medina was second with 79.
Area boys with high finishes included the Salem senior Ryan Kamperman, second in the discus (142-5) and fourth in the shot put (47-01/4); Beaver Local sophomore Brock Severs, third in the 400 dash (53.43); and the United 3200 relay team of Brayden Ganslein, Nick Hardgrove, Wyatt Medure and Andrew Frase, third in the 3200 relay (8:50.26).
