Arneault at Madonna
WEIRTON, W.Va. -- Former Oak Glen head football coach Ted Arneault Jr. was hired as the Weirton Madonna football coach on Friday in a unanimous decision by the school's hiring board.
Arneault was 31-29 during six seasons at Oak Glen including West Virginia Class AA state semifinal appearances in 2019 and 2020. Arneault's 2020 Golden Bear team was blocked from playing in the semifinal after the state tournament was canceled due to the state's COVID-19 risk map indicating high community infection rates at the time.
The 2019 team posted a 10-0 regular season record and won the OVAC Class 4A title, the school's first since 1965.
After a 2-6 season in 2021 that was marred by schedule complications due to the COVID-19 pandemic Arneault stepped down as Golden Bears' coach to pursue political office. Arneault ran in the Republican primary for Hancock County commissioner in May of 2022 and finished third in a close race.
In the fall of 2022, Arneault was back on the sidelines as Oak Glen's assistant football coach under new head coach Doug Taylor.
Former Oak Glen athletic director and current Madonna High School principal Phil Rujak welcomed Arneault into the fold in a media release on Friday.
"Coach Arneault is an excellent addition to Madonna High School," Rujak said. "His background in education and coaching will have a huge impact on our program and our student-athletes. Ted is not only a quality coach, but his is a quality person as well."
Arneault currently works as an assistant principal at Weirton Elementary. He was Oak Glen's Teacher of the Year in 2016 where he taught social studies.
Arneault was a teacher at Madonna from 2006-2010 and was the head coach of the Junior Don football program. During his time as the Jr. Don coach, his team in 2009 had an undefeated season and won the Wheeling Parochial League Championship. He also had 24 players from the Jr. Don program that were a part of Madonna's 2013 state championship team.
Madonna was 5-5 last season under the direction of Mauro Monz who was hired as the Dons' coach in April 2022. Madonna decided to part ways with the coach following the season.
