UNITY -- One strike away from getting out of a first-inning jam, East Palestine saw the flood gates open.
Devin Ray and Chase Vickery hit consecutive pitches for doubles to the fence to guide 21st-seeded Pymatuning Valley past 20th-seeded East Palestine, 19-3, in a Division III sectional opener Monday at Next Level.
The Lakers improve to 8-7 and will play at top-seeded South Range at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
John Moschell singled off the pitcher's glove and manufactured a run to give the Lakers a quick 1-0 lead. Robert Verba doubled and two walks loaded the bases.
East Palestine pitcher Cale Moraski had a strikeout for the second out and got two strikes on Ray before he lined a bases-clearing double into left field. Ray scored on the next pitch as Vickery doubled to make it 5-0.
The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the first as Moraski and Kyler Bourne singled and Tommy Beatty reached base on a strikeout. Alex Cannon walked to bring home Moraski, but the Bulldogs left the bases load.
Pymatuning Valley upped the lead to 13-1 in the second inning after eight of the first nine batters scored. The Lakers had three singles and four walks and were aided by two East Palestine errors.
East Palestine ends its season at 8-11.
Berkshire 2, United 0
BURTON -- It was a short stay in the tournament for the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference champions.
Jack Jacobs tossed a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts as United fell 2-0 to Berkshire in a Div. III sectional baseball opener on Monday.
Parker Berdine had a double to lead the Eagles offensively.
Miles Miller and Curtis Tetlow had two hits each for Berkshire.
United ends its season at 13-10. The game was initially supposed to be held at United but wet field conditions at United moved the contest to Berkshire.
Berkshire will travel to Champion for a sectional final on Wednesday.

KENT -- Salem came up short against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy 7-3 on Monday in regular season action.
Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy came in as the No. 2 team in the state in Div. II as ranked by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Darius Beck and Blaize Exline had doubles for Salem. Brock Young added a triple.
Salem is 17-7 and hosts the winner of Conneaut and Girard at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in a Div. II sectional final.
