Clippers survive Indian comeback

SALINEVILLE -- Columbiana's girls basketball team blanketed Southern with defense in the first half and then fended off a late surge by the Indians to take a 32-27 road victory on Thursday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.
Alaina Johnston had 11 points to lead the Clippers who limited the Indians to four total points in the first half.
"We just didn't shoot it very well in the first half and four points is had to overcome," Southern coach Mike Skrinjar said. "But it was nice to see us fight back in the second half. "
Camile Zentner added nine points for Columbiana, 6-5, 5-1 in the EOAC.
Freshman Kennedy Lewis sparked a Southern comeback with nine points. The Indians got to within two in the fourth quarter but could not find a way all the way back.
Southern falls to 11-2 and 5-2 in the league.
Ashley Shroades added eight points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists for the Indians. Shroades scored all of her points in the second half.
Southern will host Leetonia on Saturday.
Columbiana is at Lisbon on Monday.
Columbiana won the two quarter jayvee game, 15-4. Addison Zohnd had five points for the Clippers.

HANOVERTON -- United Local's girls basketball is halfway there.
The Eagles extended their perfect mark in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference with a 63-23 win over Valley Christian on Thursday.
Taylor Cope score 10 of her 20 points in the third quarter to lead the winners.
United is 8-3 overall and 7-0 in the league.
Colby Burton and Grace Knight added nine points each.
There was no jayvee contest.
The Eagles host Leetonia on Monday.

EAST PALESTINE -- Lisbon was outscored by East Palestine in a big third quarter, but held on for a 42-39 victory, on Thursday night.
Parker Henthorne led the Blue Devils with 16 points and 10 boards, while teammate Madison Haifley added 10 points. Serinity Stacey had seven rebounds and four steals.
Lisbon (3-6, 3-3 in EOAC) was outscored by the Bulldogs in the third period, 20-5.
Patience Champney led the Bulldogs with 14 points and Leila Martin added 11.
Lisbon's next game is at Beaver Local on Saturday. East Palestine (0-9) visits East Liverpool on Saturday.

The Potters led by one after the first quarter before the Huskies took control. Harrison led by three at the break and six after three.
East Liverpool is scheduled to host East Palestine on Saturday.
East Liverpool won the jayvee portion 33-26.
