Heartland grabs area’s highest seed

Little Heartland Christian is making big strides this season.

The Lions, carrying a seven-game winning streak into the weekend, are the area’s highest seed during the high school boys basketball tournament draw Sunday.

Heartland is seeded third out of 24 teams in the Northeast Ohio Division IV super district.

The Lions — 11-4 after a 63-60 loss at South Range on Saturday — have been bolstered by the addition of junior Jonathan Bertovich, who was the area’s leading scorer last year at East Palestine. Their other three losses this season were to Salem, Valley Christian and Lowellville.

Heartland will open sectional play on Feb. 26 against the Southern Local-Mathews winner. Heartland defeated Southern Local, 72-62, on Jan. 19 and is scheduled to play at Mathews on Friday.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association made several changes this year during the coronavirus pandemic. There will be no neutral sites for the sectional and district games with the better-seeded team hosting games. Tickets are $10 each for sectional and district games and are only available online.

All of the games in the Northeast sectional-district are scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays. Most of the the East sectional-district games are on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Wellsville and East Liverpool are seeded fifth in their respective divisions.

Wellsville (11-3) — which is in Heartland’s bracket — is fifth in Division IV and will host Kinsman Badger in the sectional opener on Feb. 26. The winner will take on seventh-seeded Lisbon on Feb. 26.

East Liverpool is seeded fifth in the Division II East sectional-district tournament.

The Potters (10-4) will open sectional play by hosting one-win Duncan Falls Philo on Feb. 24.

East Liverpool is on COVID-19 quarantine until Feb. 13.

The only other area boys team to be seeded in the top six is West Branch, seeded sixth in the Division II Northeast sectional-district. The Warriors (13-5) will host host 20th-seeded Hubbard on Feb. 20. Hubbard was a 58-50 winner at Crestview on Feb. 3.
