McDonald goes deep against Quakers

SALEM — Salem’s boys basketball team couldn’t hold off the high-powered McDonald offense on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils, who just recently started playing due to COVID restrictions in Trumbull County, came away with an 84-59 victory.

McDonald (2-0) got 33 points from Miles Culp. Jake Portolese added 19 points.

Jon Null paced the Quakers with 14 points. Drew Weir added 13 points.

Salem fell to 5-3 and has dropped two straight. The Quakers host Carrollton on Tuesday before hitting the road for three straight.

Heartland 62, Crestview 57

COLUMBIANA — Heartland Christian used a 17-5 second-quarter run to down Crestview, 62-57, Tuesday.

Jonathan Bertovich scored 12 of his game-high 26 points to lead the Lions. He also had 12 points in the fourth quarter on 8-for-8 free throw shooting. Joey Donofrio added 10 points and Steven Baker nine.

Heartland led 39-30 after three quarters and shot 13-of-14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold off the Rebels.

For the Rebels, Drake Golden scored 18 points, including 15 in the second half, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Kirkland Miller added 12 points and six rebounds. Jack Yerkey contributed 11 points and Anthony Cusick dished out four assists.

Crestview is 3-5 on the season.

Heartland also won the junior varsity game, 48-41, as Luke Reynolds scored 10 points and Jake Walker nine. Wyatt Miller topped Crestview with 13 points.

Minerva 53, West Branch 48

MINERVA — West Branch is having a rough start in the Eastern Buckeye Conference.

The Warriors lost to Minerva, 53-48, Tuesday to drop to 0-3 in league play, just 10 months after claiming their first outright league title since 1991.

Minerva was trailing 35-33 through three quarters before rallying with a 20-13 fourth-quarter run.

Minerva improves to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in EBC play. West Branch is 5-3 overall, but 0-3 in EBC action.

Noah Sallade guided the Lions with 19 points. Kole Mayle added 11.

Jaxon Hendershott led the Warriors with a game-high 23 points, including six three-pointers. Dru DeShields contribueted 15 points.

West Branch won the junior varsity game, 32-31.

The Wariors will host Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.
