Beaver Local’s games go on
CALCUTTA — Beaver Local had two middle school cases with COVID-19 positives Sunday, but the varsity volleyball and football games are still going on as scheduled.
The middle school went to remote learning for grades 5-8 Monday so the district could assess the situation and Superintendent Eric Lowe said all student will be back in class today.
Lowe said the Columbiana County Health Department is conducting contact tracing and a number of students are in quarantine. He said it also involved the middle school football team and its final football game against Toronto last week. The Toronto middle school football team has halted its season as a result.
“We weren’t notified until 5:30 p.m. Sunday and decided it was best to do remote learning (Monday) so we could work our way through the cases,” Lowe said.
The Beaver Local varsity football team resumed practice Monday after being sidelined last week due to a COVID-19 positive case. That also canceled the boys soccer sectional tournament match Saturday.
“We’ve had four positives total in the school district in the last week,” Lowe said. “Three of those have resulted in quarantines.”
Nothing has changed regarding the Beaver Local volleyball and football games .
The top-seeded Beaver Local volleyball team will host seventh-seeded Dresden Tri-Valley in a Division II district semifinal at 6 p.m. today.
Also, the Beavers will host West Branch in a regular-season football game at 7 p.m. Friday.
“We communicate on a daily basis with the health department and work collaboratively with their input on safety and health to decide what is best in regards to both school and extracurriculars when we have positive cases and school community members entering quarantine,” Lowe said. “We appreciate the collaborative relationship that our county schools have had with them since the pandemic began as their input is invaluable to our schools.”
