Chargers coach wants Bosa

SAN DIEGO (AP) – A day after the Chargers took their contract dispute with rookie defensive end Joey Bosa public, San Diego coach Mike McCoy had nice things to say about the former Ohio State star.

“I think everybody understands the business side to this,” McCoy said Thursday. “But we all understand the type of player Joey is. He loves the game, he plays with passion. So I’m sure he is going crazy being back home and not with his teammates. We all want him here.”

“Once he walks in the door, he is one of us,” McCoy added. “That is how we are going to approach it.”

Bosa, the only first-rounder who has not signed with his team, has missed all of training camp as his agents and the team wrangled over how much of his $17 million signing bonus he’ll get up front, as well as offset language in case he gets cut.

The Chargers said Wednesday that they pulled their contract offer and said they would restructure a new deal that would reflect him playing less than a full season. The team said it gave Bosa’s agents its best offer Tuesday night, and it was rejected the next day. San Diego said it offered an initial signing bonus payment larger than any draftee received in the past two drafts, and more money in 2016 than any draftee except Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.

Stewart’s jersey tops sales

NEW YORK (AP) – Breanna Stewart now can add the WNBA’s top selling jersey to a year that already includes an NCAA championship and an Olympic gold medal.

The league announced Thursday that Stewart’s jersey and merchandise of her Seattle Storm top the WNBA in sales.

Stewart says it shows the support she has received in the WNBA and hopes the league benefits too.

Olympic gold medalists held seven of the top 10 spots based on WNBAstore.com sales: Elena Delle Donne third, Maya Moore fourth, Brittney Griner sixth, Diana Taurasi eighth, Sue Bird ninth and Tamika Catchings 10th. Skylar Diggins was second followed by Shoni Schimmel at fifth and Candace Parker seventh.

The WNBA ends its Olympic break Friday. Stewart and the Storm visit Minnesota on Sunday night followed by the Sparks at Phoenix.

Dodger Stadium hosts classic

NEW YORK (AP) – Dodger Stadium will host the championship game of the 2017 World Baseball Classic, with Marlins Park and Petco Park also holding games leading up to final on March 22.

The sites and pool were announced Thursday by tournament organizers.

Brazil, Britain, Israel and Pakistan will play qualifiers Sept. 22-25 at the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones’ minor league team.

Tokyo, South Korea, Miami and Guadalajara, Mexico will host first-round games in March. Tokyo and San Diego will hold the second-round games.

The semifinals and final will be played at the home of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2009, Ichiro Suzuki hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning to lift Japan over South Korea at Dodger Stadium to win the title.

One of Bosa’s agents, Brian Ayrault, said in a statement that it was “unfortunate the San Diego Chargers have decided to manipulate facts and negotiate in the media. The team surely is not strengthening its relationship with Joey Bosa by taking this stance and making their position public.”

The Chargers, who have missed the playoffs in five of the past six seasons and were 4-12 last year, can really use Bosa, whom they took third overall in the draft.

The team lost Sean Lissemore to a season-ending shoulder injury in training camp. Damion Square was suspended Wednesday for the first four games of the season after violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. The ranks along the defensive line are alarmingly thin.

“There is not too much we can do about it,” defensive tackle Brandon Mebane said, discussing Bosa’s situation. “All we can do is just play. I don’t even know the full details. I don’t think anyone knows except the people that are doing it. It’s a tough situation.”

Indians tie team record

CLEVELAND (AP) – Rajai Davis and Jose Ramirez each stole three bases to help Cleveland tie the franchise record with eight, Brandon Guyton drove in five runs and the Indians routed the Los Angeles Angels 13-3 on Friday night.

Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor added steals for Cleveland to match the record that was first accomplished on Aug. 27, 1917, against the Washington Senators. The eight steals allowed also are the most in club history for the Angels.

Guyton homered in the second and had two-run singles in the fifth and eighth. Ramirez was 3 for 5 with a home run – extending his hitting streak to 16 games – and Kipnis was 4 for 5 for the AL Central leaders.

Carlos Carrasco (8-6) allowed three runs in seven innings and won for the first time since July 20.

Tyler Skaggs (1-1) gave up seven runs in five innings for the Angels. Albert Pujols drove in two runs and Kole Calhoun homered.

Los Angeles has lost eight in a row, its longest losing streak since 1999.

The Indians ran wild on the combination of Skaggs and catcher Geovanny Soto. Davis, who leads the AL with 31 steals, stole second and third and scored in the first. Ramirez duplicated the feat in the fourth.

Davis and Ramirez each stole second in the fifth, and Kipnis swiped second in the first.

Lindor stole second in the sixth with Deolis Guerra pitching. Soto’s throw sailed into center field, allowing Kipnis to score. Ramirez, Kipnis and Lindor each drove in two runs.

Indians designated hitter Carlos Santana didn’t play after being hit in the head by a foul ball while standing in the dugout Thursday. Santana was back in the dugout wearing a batting helmet Friday and scrambled out of the way of another foul ball in the first inning.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Angels: 1B C.J. Cron (broken left hand) began a minor league rehab assignment on Friday and is expected to play five or six games before returning to the Angels.

Indians: Santana will undergo further evaluation to determine if he has a concussion.
