Not a big fan of the Republican Party

To the editor: Here we go again. Dave Johnson and his minions singing the greatness of a loser like Donald Trump Jr. His daddy was the worst president this country had ever seen and that includes George W. Bush. Yes, this county is red but that will change if the Republican keeps on the same path. The young voters will put you in your place. They want change and you refuse to do so. We need people like Jim Jordon and Bill Johnson to be gone. Neither one has done anything for this country for years but set on their behind doing nothing but complaining how bad things but won’t do ...

Norfolk Southern should be buying residential properties

To the editor: It is a common understanding in the retail industry that “if you break it, you buy it.” That same principle applies to a community destroyed by a reckless corporation as well as a community broken by a careless customer. The overdue bill owed by Norfolk Southern for its wanton destruction of East Palestine is a hefty one that far exceeds the $387 million claimed lost in its 1st Quarter Report on the “Eastern Ohio Incident.” However, not a dollar has been paid so far to directly compensate property owners for their colossal loss of value. Making matters worse is ...

‘Pennies for Paws’ helps Humane Society

To the editor: A million. Pretty big number. Even a half-million! But that is how many pennies our wonderful elementary students of Columbiana County collected for the Humane Society in the first annual ‘Pennies for Paws” last year. By the way, $5,000, if you’re still moving the decimal point. This year’s drive is up and running and we’re hoping for even more. Maybe a million, probably not, but as Jerry Lewis used to say in his MD telethon “Just one dollar more.” Depending on the individual schools and their schedules, some campaigns have started while others will ...

A big ‘thank you’ from an East Palestine resident

To the editor: This letter again is about the February 3rd train accident in East Palestine although it might be slightly different than some others. My family has lived in East Palestine for a long time and I chose to raise my children here after living away during their early years because of the sense of community and family. I want to say thank you to all who have been involved in this tragic event from the beginning. Thank you so much to ALL the first responders who came to help the night it happened not knowing what they were responding to. Thank you to the ones who worked ...

Urges community support of school levy

To the editor: As an active and involved citizen, parent, and community volunteer with the Salem City School district and proud alumnus of the SHS Class of 1982, I am writing in complete and unequivocal support of the proposed May 2nd bond levy initiative that will provide for the future construction of a new K-8 campus for the students of Salem. While the district showcases one of the most “proficient and skilled team of building maintenance professionals in the area,” the ever-present mechanical and structural challenges brought forth by far-exceeding individual building life ...

Ban enacted on private property owners is restrictive

To the editor: At the recent public hearing held by the Columbiana County Commissioners regarding a ban on construction of large solar facilities and large wind farms in the unincorporated parts of seven townships in the county, Commissioner Weigle brought up my longtime support of the work of Western Reserve Land Conservancy. He stated that 898 acres of land in the county is controlled by the Conservancy and that solar panels cannot be placed on that land. That statement is very true. Most of those parcels of land have a conservation easement on them, and for good reason. They are in ...
