Voters should support proposed “Sales and Use Tax” (Renewal)

To the editor:

Columbiana County residents, once again the “Sales and Use Tax” is being introduced on the ballot for the May 6, 2025 Primary Election.

There was much controversy over the ballot language, which I believe was the reason for its’ failure. Many residents mistakenly understood it to be a new or an additional tax. Had the ballot language been clearly identified as a (Renewal) I firmly believe the “Sales and Use Tax” would have passed.

The revenue from the “Sales and Use Tax” supports our county in numerous ways and the loss of these funds would be extremely detrimental. Here are some facts about the “Sales and Use Tax” that may be unfamiliar to county residents.

The “Sales and Use Tax” has been the source of funding for approximately 70% of our county’s services for nearly 40 years. It supports essential services such as 4H, the Dog Pound and Adoption Center, the Justice System, Law Enforcement, Probation Services, the Prosecutor’s Office, Public Defender Services, and Infrastructure.

As residents of Columbiana County, we cannot afford another failure of this tax! It’s also important to note the “Sales and Use Tax” does not solely impact county residents, as it would if property tax was the source of funding. Consumers from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and neighboring counties contribute over 30% to our county’s sales tax revenue.

The Primary Election Ballot on May 6th clarifies the language, specifying the “Proposed Sales and Use Tax” as a (Renewal) for clarity. Let’s help to maintain Columbiana County’s supportive services, which benefits each of us, and vote “YES” for the “Sales and Use Tax”!
