Concerns over a preventable public health crisis
To the editor:
As a former Wellsville Councilman and Wellsville Local Board of Education member, I am deeply concerned about the well-being of our children. I urge the federal government to prioritize the issue of flavored disposable vapes, which have become increasingly popular among youth.
Currently, the FDA has authorized only 23 e-cigarette products for sale, all of which are tobacco-flavored and intended for adults. However, many fruity, colorful, and kid-friendly flavored vape products are readily available to children. These unregulated vapes are not only more affordable but also stronger and larger than their regulated counterparts, making them a significant threat to the health and safety of our adolescents.
According to the CDC’s 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, the use of illegal vapes has led to an alarming increase in nicotine addiction among middle school students. Tobacco product use among middle school students increased from 4.5% in 2022 to 6.6% in 2023, and e-cigarette use surged from 3.3% to 4.6%.
The health risks associated with these products are severe, including respiratory problems and impaired brain development. We cannot let our children succumb to this preventable public health crisis.
As a concerned citizen, I urge the FDA to take action and use its regulatory authority to curb the sale of illegal disposable vapes. We must create a safer environment for our children and prevent flavored vapes from leading the next generation into addiction. Join me and other leaders nationwide in calling for immediate action to protect our children’s health and future.
