To the editor:
Recently received my water/sewer/refuse/storm water bill from the ELO water department.
For any of your readers that don't care to do the math, the city has recently passed along a 45.9% increase on our water rates. I guess they can raise our rates whenever they feel the need without our input. When was the last time any of us got a 46% increase in anything?
While looking through the other utilities I pay, I began to notice my water bill is one of my most expensive utilities. I thought no one could beat Comcast but the city has succeeded in doing so. Next it will be our sewer rates, garbage rates, or maybe another fee.
East Liverpool could have join forces with the Buckeye Water District several years ago to help spread our costs over a larger number of customers.
This would have kept any cost increases spread over a much larger base but they chose to be stubborn.
Although this increase or the outrageous percentage doesn't surprise me, where does the city plan on getting the monies for the crumbling water and sewer infrastructure that needs repaired or replaced? They recently received a generous grant to pave portions of Dresden Ave but couldn't afford to replace the aging water lines. How will it be long before this section of road is strewn with patches and potholes?
We might as well buckle up because more increases will be coming our way in the future.
